Strange that you ask this question now - I experienced exactly the same thing a few times in the last few days! A single 'bong', but no dash lights or warning messages. All I can tell you is that the onset of this phenomenon was followed about three days later by an alternator failure (which is being replaced as we speak!). I have no idea if the two things were related (some sort of under-voltage indication, perhaps?).

Check the bonnet switch. As you go over a bump the bonnet will lift slightly and cause the bonnet open warning to start, but it stops before the display changes. 1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

Ah, that might well be it - my bonnet catches, particularly near-side, were getting full of crud and I'd noticed when the bonnet was being opened and shut while I was having the alternator issue that the near-side was getting pretty hard to close properly. So I gave the catches a clean-out before taking it in for the new alternator yesterday. Picking it up this afternoon - will see if the 'random bong' scenario has gone away now that the bonnet shuts properly!

The other thing it could be was an outside temperature warning. Mine beeps or bongs when it goes down to 4 degrees and only does it once. 2006 TdV6 HSE.

Another thing it could be is the front passenger seat safety belt warning. Mine would bong with the lightest of things on the seat on a rough road. Does it happen with a passenger in the car? If not try closing the passenger seat belt.

It happens with and without pssenger, but the strangest thing is that no warning sign on the dash just the single chime...

If it bongs with both front seats in use and safety belts closed that rules my suggestion out.
