Had the battery light come onto day while fording at approx 400mm depth for 50 metres or so.
Lost the power steering while in the water, but got across ok.
Once out of the water for a short while, light went off and power steering came back.
D3 seems OK since.
Is this supposed to happen?

Not quite; but it sounds like your aux drive belt was slipping. Maybe the serpentine belt needs a look at, or the tensioner is a little loose?Dr. Ian Malcolm:

Transgenic tomato anyone?

I know some Vauxhall vehicles suffer loss of powered steering with faulty alternators, so maybe you flooded your electrics

Yes, but many Vauxhall's have electric power steering; the disco3 steering is hydraulic and powered by the aux drive belt. If this belt slips you lose alternator, power steering and aircon.Dr. Ian Malcolm:

If you drop a wheel into a hole when wading the DSC can think you are in trouble and cut power to the engine, switch it off.
I did get an engine an transmission fault when wading. Engine would not rev but it settled eventually.
I used CRC Plasticote to seal the module behind the battery. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€Â

Spoke to LR dealer today and was told that the aux belt has a self tensioner so won't need to be adjusted. The belt is not toothed and is liable to slip on occasions when wet.
