Basic oil filter question...
Really basic question here... I did an engine service on the TDV6 yesterday.
When changing the oil filter do you chaps locate it in the plastic housing cap then screw that on or in the top of the block first and then screw the plastic housing on?
A couple of youtube vids I watched showed putting the filter in the cap first and then just screwing it on - they didnt make a huge effort to locate the nipple on the bottom of the filter in the right place in the base of the housing. This is what I did except I did roughly get the nipple on the bottom of the filter in the right place before I started to tighten the cap down.
Then the OCD kicks in and I start worrying that it might not have located properly or caught somewhere and crushed as I tightened the cap up....
Put my mind at rest or tell me I have done it wrong and need to replace it...
(it started and idled fine with no oil light on etc if that makes any difference)
You need to make sure the locating peg on the filter is located in the bottom of the filter body first, then fit the housing back over the filter.
If you have fit the filter to the plastic cap then screwed it back on this is wrong and the peg will not be located and starve the engine of oil.
Also you might have crushed the oil filter.

Took it out and checked it and all was fine thankfully. I pulled the filter and replaced it into the block housing first and then screwed the cap down. Dont know why I didnt do it this way in the first place really!

Even the land rover manual states to fit the filter into the housing cover then fit the assembly to the engine.
But this is a bad method Flack is correct locate the filter in the housing then refit the cover.
Always take your time and never force things these engines are very expensive to put right.

Having cut the end off a Mann oil filter, the nipple is blocked off and doesn’t do anything.
I can only assume oil comes up the inside and is collected on the outside. Or vice Versa

Correct, the nipple is blocked on MAN filters and also on genuine LR filters supplied by Mahle !
I assume this is the case for other suppliers too, but as I don't use them I can't confirm this.
Edit: I only use genuine LR or Mahle!yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

the purpose of the nipple is to drain the filter housing so it doesn't p*ss out everywhere when you undo the cap (obvious really if you think about it) that's why they rattle a lot if you don't put the nipple in the hole as the oil drains out when you shut down then has to refill when you start plus you prob loose some pressure alsoplease excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick, thankyou
