BAS FBH and Smartthings automation

Hi all,

Fitted the Bell Auto Services Fuel burning heater remote with GSM last night - a great alternative to fighting with the glow plugs!

Really impressed with how simple to install, operate from the remote fob e.t.c.

Only downside was that the few options to control the device (via a Webasto app (which is a bit clunky on iphone) or directly via text message)) weren't flexible enough,

As I use Samsung Smartthings to automate my home/stuff I wanted to also have the Disco warm up when certain conditions are met, e.g. I press a button on a control panel or if I'm at home & it's a weekday and it's below 0C or I can simply say "Alexa, set Disco heater to ON"

So for those of you who use Smartthings the steps are:

Firstly install a new Smartapp in the Smartthings IDE - CoRE:

http://thingsthataresmart.wiki/index.php?title=CoRE

Next - Create a new Virtual Switch within Smartthings IDE (Call it e.g. "Disco Heater")

https://community.smartthings.com/t/faq-cr...ce/11282/2

Next - go into the CoRE smartapp and create a new "Piston" - configure this to:

Trigger an action when a Switch changes to on
>Select your new virtual switch
>Set the action to "Location Services>Send SMS"
>In the message section enter "ON"
>In the mobile section enter to as your SIM in the BAS FBH

Repeat this again for when the switch is "OFF" and set the text to "OF"

You will need to complete one final step - this is to add the SMS gateway phone number from smartthings as an authorised number - to do this text your FBH the following
1234ACCLIM:9993389

That's it ... you should then be able to:

Turn on the heater via the Smartthings app
Control the heater using IFTTT (e.g. if my calendar says "Work" AND it's "<5C" AND I'm at Home then SET switch to ON"
Control the heater using Alexa or Google Home or Siri
Control the heater using a smart panel & actiontiles as below:

Appreciate that if you don't have smart home tech and/or use smartthings then it may not be of interest to you!

The reason I integrated this way is because you can't automatically send SMS on an iPhone - apple have locked that ability - hence why I'm sending SMS automatically out of ST rather than using IFTTT app on my iphone - if you use Andriod then you could integrate the FBH by:

Using IFTTT app combined with the "andriodSMS" plugin to automatically start the heater when IFTTT rules are met e.g. link your Alexa/google home to IFTTT then trigger the heater by voice

You could also use the native Smarttings app on your phone to trigger the heater as you can send to destinations outside of your own phone when not using iphone from what I understand....

For smarttiles running on a tablet at home the integration to have a simple switch to turn on the heater is needed if you don't want to relay information from an adroid phone - if that didn't bother you, then use IFTTT on an andriod phone that gets alerted via smarttings then triggers an SMS to the heater, but as above, I didn't have the option!

Hopefully for those looking at how to integrate a warm Discovery with a smart home this is useful!

I like that, thanks for taking the time to share

Hoping to get my FBH remote fitted next week or 2 and this could be useful

No problem - only update is that I need to reconfigure the virtual switch to make it a “latching” type that turns back off after 30 mins - for now I’ve just setup a task to reset it to OFF at midday
