Bank Holiday Weekend family getaway Broke my Discovery!
Hi All, This is my first post but i have been following the forum for over twelve months; Last Bank Holiday my wife had the great idea of getting away for the long weekend to Newquay.
After 3 hours in traffic and a stop for fuel, and five miles south of Gloucester services on the M5 the road became clear so we accelerated to motorway speeds. After just 5 mins the engine let out some funny noises whilst travelling at over 70mph in the fast lane, lost all power and we were able to roll to the hard shoulder.
For anybody who heading towards Devon and Cornwall that weekend, you may have seen us. We were the Fuji White Disco 4 on the southbound M5, 5 miles south of Gloucester services.
Needless to say AA was called local recovery lorry arrived with 20 mins, and we were towed to Michael Wood Services where the recovery man tried to re-start the Disco. His diagnosis was that i had mis-fuelled the car, and offered to drain the tank..!
I explained to him the clever device that lives in the fuel filler which prevent such stupidity, whilst my wife rang the services to double check. The fuel station confirmed that i had bought diesel, a yorkie bar, some washer fluid and inflated my tyres.
After some further head scratching, and sniffing of the fuel filler whilst simultaneously looking at me and tutting, the recovery man admitted defeat. Nine hours after setting-out and £250 for the recovery we landed back at home.
Further recovery vehicle used the following week to take the car to the garage for repairs (independent) the next day the worst was confirmed 'Snapped Crank Shaft' new engine required...! I've read all the posts about the build problem but I'm still blaming the wife because she was driving at the time.
The garage has given me a couple of engine options, but can someone recommend a good refurbished Engine Provider?
Thanks Matt

Ouch! I feel for you and I do hope everything turns out ok.Belts, oil pump casing and water pump by Flack
Transmission flush by Geoff
Does it have a full JLR service history? If so there's a chance of a contribution from JLR.
I am not sure that there is a "a good refurbished Engine Provider?" for the D4 other than JLR.
A second hand engine with a known mileage & history might be your best bet.

Over 90,000 miles and last few years servicing has been with independent, been quoted around £4500 for a refurbished engine but i have no experience of the companies and not may reviews are published on the usual websites for the providers, and hence my request for recommendations.

Who quoted "quoted around £4,500 for a refurbished engine" ? You need to define "refurbished" very carefully, and research anyone offering you a refurbished engine. IMHO £4,500 sounds way too cheap, others with more experience will, hopefully, be along soon.
Any warranty relating to a refurbished engine is only as good as the company behind it, someone like Warranty Direct is OK but.....
