Bad torque convertor

Hi I have a disco 3 and got the judders and Rev hunting added dr tranny but is better but not right so going down the road of a new torque convertor
I’ve asked one garage that sent me this

Hi Again,

You do realise that when a torque breaks up all the metal debris and dust goes though the box and the valve body? So when you change the torque and your back to square one within a month or two if not straight away then the money to sort just the torque is a complete waste. Anyway if you want us to do that then if it’s a rebuilt torque including fitting then your looking at £600+vat and if you need a factory reman then your looking at something closer to 1050+vat.

Regards
Ross

Not sure I want them to even touch my car now

Is this correct or is he trying to rip me off by selling me. A new gearbox as I don’t have the money for a gearbox as well

So far I have sorted this out with a local friend of a friends garage

I have sorted the parts

120 for new sump filter and dextrin vl oil
380 for remanufactured torque convertor
Garage wants 350 to fit and flush

I got a recon torque convertor from Bristol Transmissions... it was one of their modified ones which will not fail (they cut it open and do a big of magic inside) - and that was £600 +vat IIRC... but because I had basically run the gearbox on Dr Tranny for er.. 2 years with a dodgy Torque Convertor, the gearbox need rebuilding, which also had a knock-on effect to the transfer box and rear propshaft! - that was an expensive day. but I have nothing but praise for Bristol Transmissions

I wouldnt say he was potentially ripping you off, more like he has probably seen this happen before and is pointing it out to you, he most likely doesnt know of this forum and the great success many have had with just a new t/c and oil, but only replacing the t/c doesnt take into account the rest of the box may be serviceable but it is still worn.

Plus if course as hes seen it before he is covering his Censored because if it goes wrong the first thing you will do is blame him!

Well I have ordered a new torque convertor and is being delivered Tuesday and fitted Friday was gonna fit myself but a garage will fit for 350 so hardly worth all the scraped hand and knuckles doing it on jacks etc I have dr tranny in it but I only done 4 miles with it in there as after I added it I thought I may as well get the problem sorted properly as I tow an 8 meter caravan round France every year for 4 weeks so prob wouldn’t last long

Had a new TC fitted by BT at 140k, that was dead by 160k, gearbox rebuild done. Then car's engine died at 166k, car scrapped. Hey ho, it's only money. Sad

Thanks mate I never noticed it before as was more interested in the judding and that but only had it 2 weeks before it went in for torque converter to be done so didn’t know if it was normal it’s not that normal just slightly noticeable but with the new torque converter it’s like driving a brand new car so smooth no juddering changes gears as it should very smooth
