In the D4, I'd take the dog down to fields next to the Thames most days and when we got back to the motor I'd sit on the tailgate for 15-20 mins with the dog in the cage watching the world go by. If find now I can do exactly the same in the D5 with the folding shelf thing...in fact I find it is more comfortable sitting wise and as you can also lower the rear of the motor to the bumpstops it's less of a hop up for short 's like me

It's better than nowt, but the D3/4's tailgate is spot on (for me). I sat on a FFRR tailgate on Friday, courtesy of RedMerle, that's also not as good as the D3/4's, but it's deeper than the D5's.
A few times a year I use the tail gate as a viewing platform, with the upper section closed. This can still be done with the FFRR, although due to the curved boot there's a fair bit less standing space than the D3/4. Obviously this isn't an option on the D5
For me, the D5 has a few negatives as I mentioned. I could live with them of course, but on a like for like spec. basis with the D4 Landmark, the D5 is big £'s. So my thoughts are if I''m going to make compromises anyway, I might as well go for an approved used FFRR for probably less £'s than a new D5. The 7 seat option isn't so relevant for us now, the lack of flat folding rear seats would be a big compromise though.
Have to see what happens (or not) with the Defender or if another manufacturer comes up with anything.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

The thing is the perfect car doesn't exist, there is always a compromise. Like Tom I use the tailgate as a viewing platform from time to time (although my needs are much greater than his). For some the compromise of the D5 is too great for others it isn't. I have another 18 months before I change, but I don't really need the 7 seats anymore but I do want the towing capability and I do want the comfort. Having seen this post and a few more on the road now I have sightly changed my views on the rear view.
Firstly seeing it as presented by Landrover, it still seems a little odd / different, but I think its placement is used as is a visual trick to make the width of the vehicle, which has got wider over the years / models look thinner than it actually is. Landrover has used these tricks before to make a large SUV look smaller than it actually is and perhaps this is a good thing.
With the centrally placed number plate it appears wider, but to my eye still does not look quite right, someone has commented "is it centrally placed?" and whilst we can see it is the middle horizontally it is the vertical placement that seems to be out. As I mentioned somewhere before when moaning about the D5 and aftermarket changes, this is again proof you can’t polish a turd.
Having seen more D5s now, I dislike it even more than when it came out. Although I have possibly just collected something that most people would consider even worse, for many reasons, we now have a BMW i3!Andy

Anyone remember Gerry’s comments a few months back about putting tuners (body kit) companies out of business? Seems to be the opposite as the kits I have seen have the number plate mod included 16 D4 Landmark

I think that looks a lot better from the back.
I really like the D5 and really want one. We have just had one for a week along side the D4 as a test - its a really nice car and thats now 4 weeks of extended testing now to try and see how it would work for us practically but sadly it just doesn't stack up we would have to keep the D4 for the dogs I'm dreading when they release the PHEV as I will really really want one.
Clocks ticking on the D4 its 3 years old in September so desperately need to find a replacement, praying details of the defender comes out and it looks a goer otherwise it could be a crew cab or something MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

I agree with that Paul. For many years I ran Saab’s for business. A great neutral/non flash professional image. I’m less concerned about that now though, as I don’t see that many new clients and when I do they’re referrals from long term clients.
Having Land Rover or Discovery on the bonnet is preferable to Range Rover though. Although lots of my clients think my D4 is a FFRR anyway.

I thought they saw me coming asking over £40k for a D4. They may as well just pull my trousers down and me, asking £70k+ for the model I’d have
£70k for what was originally sold as a ‘go anywhere’ family SUV.

Considering that I once met up with the owner of the (much larger) company that had just bought a stake in our own business and he was horrified to see me get out of a company “Range Rover” (which was actually a mid range Freelander 2!), many people really don’t have a clue which one is which anyway 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
