Yes it can if you don't want to get the LR Ipod integration kit, but there are sometimes complaints of it not being very loud in comparison to other audio sources. Bodsys Brake Bible

I have a Belkin adaptor from halfords (£19.99) powers the ipod from the rear cig lighter and has a 3.5mm audio out to connect to the input.

Sound quality is excellent but I agree it is not as loud as the CD/radio and needs the main volume up a bit. Goes plenty load enough for me with no distortion and compared to the cost of the fully integrated kit it was a no-brainer. 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

With ipods and other MP3's it is better to get an output from the main I/O rather than the headphone jack, as you get full volume. I have a creative vision, so I plug into the video out socket on the adaptor, but I understand for ipods belkin do a combined power lead that has a jack plug near the ciggy power adaptor thing that gives a stronger signal. Yep, that's the one in my link above (pic is poor though) it does not use the headphone output on the ipod but a line level out from the dock connector. 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Ipods have their sound volume restricted thanks to the PC brigade protecting our hearing - obviously we can't be trusted. Some versions of ipod can have this limit removed others can't. As a work around when you transfer songs over you can increase the recording volume under preferences, A quick search on iPod forums will show you how to do this, I've done it on mine and it works well enough.
