Auto transmission behaviour.

Having now done over 2000 miles, I have noticed a few behaviour characteristics of the auto gear box that puzzle me. Can somebody else confirm if they are normal.

1. When driving from a cold start, there is NO engine braking. I drive down a fairly long hill from my house to the roundabout about 1 mile away. It drives away and changes up to 3rd at about 30mph. It seems to rev higher in each gear when cold. When I am up to 30mph, if I take my foot off the accelerator, the engine immediately goes to idle speed. It feels like it has gone to neutral, and the car coasts along. If I press the accelerator in this coasting situation, the revs pick up, and the car drives OK.

After a couple of miles, it starts to warm up, and the engine braking returns, and the gear shift points start to occur at much lower revs.

I know this gearbox is an adaptive 6 speed unit, and this scenario may well be part of the normal warm up process.

Gareth - just noticed that I am getting the same thing. For the first 2 miles (while engine cold) if I lift off at all, the engibe goes to tick over revs - this happens in D, in Sport Drive & (unbelievably) in Command Shift!! After about 2 miles, all returns to normal & there is engine braking ie when take foot off, revs gradually drop with road speed reducing.
Surely this cannot be correct?, so often in poor road conditions (winter) it is that first few miles that I am driving back roads & need engine braking for added control. Will add to my list of bugs for LR to look at next week!!

I think this is normal behaviour. For optimal wear and tear avoidance, the engine needs to run at higher than normal RPM while warming up. That means less engine braking.

Well, It still does it after 5k miles, and it has'nt broken or got worse, so I suppose its normal.
