Auto box probably on way out - advise if poss.

Hi all,

Just looking for some advise.

By all the symptoms I believe my autobox is on its way out. Been playing up a fair bit recently especially on hills. Clutch slipping then jumping into gear with trammsion fault coming up.
Read codes with my icarsoft Tool- icorrect gear ratio/ gear 5 incorrect gear ratio/gear 6 incorrect gear ratio.
The transmission fluid was only changed recently and it’s on 130,000! I did it and it was pretty black. Obviously left in way to long and prob caused some serious heat amd damage.
I changed it manually so have only got a percentage of the old oil out and didn’t get what was in the TC out.
My question being - Is there any point getting it flushed properly? Would/could it keep it going for longer given the symptoms or would it probably not help much.?
P.s I’ve owned the truck for a year and got it off my old boss who had it since new. It’s been very well maintained and serviced and drove fine till very recently. I can’t believe no one had changed the fluid before and that I didn’t check it sooner😭
PPS. When I changed the fluid I made sure fluid level was perfect using the icarsoft tool to read temp and at 40degrees checked and all was good. ( annoying as I was hoping it might have been abit low before and that was causing some of the problems).

TIA

Tom

Trouble is LR don't recommend auto box fluid changes earlier.

Dr Tranny may cover it up for a short while but I think you are due a new box

Mine was doing this. Incorrect gear blah blah I was told that they do this because of stator bush wear and the only fix is a rebuild or replace including the tc. Bristol transmissions all the way. Thumbs Up

Same here I had to have the gearbox reconditioned at 130,000 in 2015. I went to Tameside Transmissions in Manchester. It cost me just short of £2500 with the vat. Been spot on since Thumbs Up

Our D3 had a rebuilt transmission from Bristol Transmissions fitted six months ago and it’s perfect. I’d say better than new although that was a while ago now!

Ours had had oil changes a couple of times but was definitely worn out by 150,000 miles. Once the clutches start slipping, the oil gets worse and it’s downhill. Dr Tranny kept the judders away for a few months though.

When I was chatting to the guy who does the auto boxes he said they do a couple of mods as standard but wouldn’t tell me what which makes a significant difference to the gearbox life wise and said it makes it better. Love to know what though. Thumbs Up

Thanks for replies guys.

The day I posted this I decided to go and grab another 5 litres of transmission fluid and some Lucas tranny fix.
Drained fluid for a second time in the last 3 weeks ( so hoping not too much old oil left in now ) and refilled with Lucas fix included.

It’s certainly done something, as it wasn’t liking 3rd to 4th before and that’s much smoother on the change now.
Equally it’s not thrown a transmission fault going up any hills since then, seems to be finding the gears and not slipping.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not perfect but if I drive it normally it seems ‘ok’ now. If I gave it some beans though I’m sure it would slip! I’m to scared to try so that just driving it around in a conservative manor!

I’m sure as you have all said and by those dreaded fault codes it is dying. It if I can get a few more months out of it like this il be a happy man!

Cheers.

P.s out of interest what should oil temp be between when driving around normally? Or what should it not go above. Out of interest more than anything as been taking live readings off mine.
Cheers

Tom
