Auto - 6th Gear
Just a check that my experience is normal.
Driven from cold, I always warm the car up gently until it is at operating temperature. However I don't live very far from the motorway so I am running at reasonable speeds quite quickly.
The gearbox, in auto, won't change upto 6th gear which is annoying. Even blipping it into command shift and out again doesn't seem to encourage it. This is annoying. However putting the cruise control on brings 6th instantly. Taking cruise off normally keeps sixth gear although sometimes it does change back down to fifth again. Couldn't really understand why the cruise control was allowed to have 6th gear and I wasn't.
??!!
Obviosuly when all nicely warmed through it slips into 6th fine.
Many thanks

I often knock it across into Command Shift then manually knock it up into 6th, it will hold 6th for a long time before changing back to 5th.
I often use it on the motorway when I know i dont want it auto changing to 5th.Duncan

Didn't think you have the option of 6th in command shift. I haven't on mine anyway Pot Noodle Challenge Winner 2011

It will only only let you change up to 6th if above a certain speed (55mph from memory, but I could be wrong).

With an engine at 'normal' temp, 6th gear in commandshift can be done at anything above 50mph. If you drop below 50, or if a heavy load is placed on the engine, it will come back to 5th itself.
If you can't get 6th at 60-70mph then I reckon a trip to the dealer is called for.....

I just fire the engine and start driving, of course very gently while cold.
Applying stable throttle pressure, gearbox usually mantains 2000/2200 rpm. reducing gear as neccesary when going uphill until it reach again that range, while engine temp is in "cold" range. If I mantain same gentle pressure when engine is warm, revs would be around 1.300/1.500.
I also found that if I let the engine just warm before I start driving, it takes A LOT more time to reach normal level.
So I tend to think that engine managemet do it's best to reach normal temp as fast as possible.
But maybe I'm all wrong, of course....PG'ed

6th GEAR
I think it was a shogun auto that I owned that was programmed not to go into 6th(or top gear) until the engine was warm.I have had other cars with this but cannot remember which ones!
