Crumbs! Forgot about this.

After reaching Alice, George and his mates got a job on a vineyard. They spent some time there recouping funds. They found it hard, and though they had living accommodation, it was far from comfortable. They did however, get free wine and beer! To put a scale on things, the farm was 90 kms from the nearest civilisation, so no walking to the pub!.

From Alice, they carried on up the Stuart highway and made Darwin. I think they didn’t spend too much time there and carried on down to the west. I got a message from George when they reached Broome. They had a double puncture and were annoyed at having to spend money on the car! Something that they had not had to do so far.

George and travel companions were then heading for Perth. They made Perth, but did not enjoy it. The weather was poor (winter), there were few like minded travelers there, and he was running out of money.

They sold the car for less than they hoped, bought air tickets to Greece, and flew to an island where he met up with some Greek friends for a week of camping.

Then he came home! That was about 2 months ago. Absolutely skint, but with some great memories. He’s now living with us again. He immediately got out and carpet bombed our area with his cv, to get himself a job. Quickly got a bar job locally, and he’s now getting his finances back on track.

He’s got his travels out of his system, and is now looking for a career.

Sounds like he had a great trip.

Oh and it is no longer Ayers Rock it is now Uluru/Ayers Rock - we have to be politically correct these days.

Surely he would not have lost much money on the Dunnydore as it would have not cost much in the first place Laughing

How easy is it to buy, or register, and insure a car for a foreigner with no real Aussie address?

Not real sure as I am not a foreigner Laughing

However you need to understand that ignoring external territories Australia is a federation of six independent States and two self governing territories. Each has their own rules.

The one common aspect for me as a local is that I need a recognised address in the jurisdiction that you are trying to register the vehicle in - to get registration interstate I would need to show a rates account, phone bill, electricity account or something like that which has your address on it proving where you live. I assume foreigners hook up with friends or relatives and they vouch for you with the authorities eg provide an affidavit or something like that.

NSW is about the only remaining State that requires annual MOTs so if travelling interstate when it is due it can be problematic but in some cases interstae arrangements exist.

To get registration you will have to buy personal insurance which covers persons not vehicles - it is complusory - in some states it is part of the registration fee but in others you buy it seperately. Vehicle insurance is not compulsory but obviously advisable - basically 3 levels - comprehensive that covers all aspects of having an accident, your car and the others involved are covered, third party in which your car is not covered at all but the car you run into is, and fire and theft which is the same as third party but in addition if you own car catches fire or is stolen it is covered. To get any of these sorts of cover you just ring up or go online and buy your cover - a note from your UK insurer saying you have been a good boy and outlining your claim history would help get insurance and reduce the amount you pay.

That is it simply Laughing

George bought it in Tasmania, from a friends family, who’s house they were staying in. I’m not sure about the selling of the vehicle in Perth, he sold it to a trader who ‘specialised’ in buying/selling cars to back packers and travelers! Sounds like the Aussie version of WBAC!

We’re looking at doing all of Route 1 plus up (& poss down) the road up (& down) the middle so we’re going to have to find a co that rents for at least a couple of months, doesn’t prohibit going into certain states/territories, and doesn’t have a crazy 100km a day limit. Buying just seemed an easy option.

PS It’s the garaging address for the registration that is the stumbling point. Big Cry Big Cry http://gradgoneglobal.com/buying-car-australia/

There are plenty of grey nomads who sell up who then have no fixed abode and are able to register their vehicles - there are ways around the issue but being a local I am not up on it.

By world standards, Aust is a very expensive place to hire vehicles and the hire companies do their best to rip you off so buying and then selling is probably the cost effective option for a longer trip - depends on what you want to do.

Bow down Bow down to you both. Sadly if we do buy a car it’ll be a cheap & reliable (hopefully) Japanese or Korean, no LR.

You need a Ute down under Thumbs Up

In case of doubt - check out 4WD Action magazine (you can get it at least on iPad) and on YouTube same name. Their videos are rather awesome with serious off-roading, some product placement of beer and other products, banter between the guys, cooking recipies, etc. Thumbs Up
