“Upper sump” removal help

Afternoon all.

So today’s latest saga unfolds. Nearing completion of re fitting my turbo, went to fit the oil drain back into the sump, picked up the bolt and found this...

I knew there was an oil leak from it but assumed a damaged o ring which was confirmed on removal. Obviously now there’s no thread holding the clamp also which probably didn’t help. Looks like I need to remove the “upper sump” I don’t know it’s correct name so that I can install a helicoil.

Or.... do I remove the front diff assembly to gain access on the car ? Which would you guys suggest would be the better option ? I have an angle drill and helicoil kits, it’s just gaining access to it.
Please help ! Thumbs Up

you could try some sort of chemical metal and a releasing agent on the bolt so you could still get it back out again?

I cant remember what I used before, but I used boot polish as a release agent, worked fine but it wasn't under that much pressure.

I struggled with the drivers side drive shaft tunnel.

To remove upper sump.

Remove Fan
Remove fan cowl top and BOTTOM.
Remove Aux belt tensioner.
Remove dip stick. Remove dip stick tube bolt at the top, pull up a few inches. Do not REMOVE! As its a pain to re thread it through the engine.
Remove the bracket for the automatic gearbox cooler pipes, by the AC compressor. I think a 13mm UJ is required for this.
Unto the 8mm bolts holding the power cable conduit up.
Remove starter motor. (the tiny bolts into the sump gave me problems breaking)
You will need to pull the 2 small pipes out of the steering rack on the drivers side. Oil will drain out.
The sump should now move foward and upwards by the radiator

Refit PAS pipes temporary while you work on the sump

Thanks guys. Removed the front diff in the end. Given the driveshaft and downpipe were already off etc it seemed the most logical route. Wasn’t too bad to be fair given the front lower arm bolts were copperslipped and easy to take out. Not the easiest lump to man handle but to be honest if I had to do a turbo again on one of these i would happily yank the diff out. Makes access tons easier. Especially for the drain and that stupid wrap underneath bracket. Thumbs Up
