Arrgh! Engine System Fault .......
No sooner have I started talking about extended warranty I get a fault!
I have just been out to drop my parents at the airport. On the way back having just got onto a short dual carriageway, I accelerated to about 70.
After a minute, ESF came up on the lcd. No bongs or other lights. The message stayed on for about 2 seconds then went off. It then came on again about 4 seconds later, again with no bong or other lights. It continued to cycle on then off every 4 seconds.
There does not appear to be any loss of power, maybe a slightly longer than usual lag on initial acceleration, but its got plenty of power and is perfectly drivable.
It continued to display this message no matter what, on side streets, idling at a standstill. I switched off and on again, the message still keeps appearing every 4 seconds, without any other bongs lights or messages.
I have had an ESF similar to this once before, but that stayed on and the engine lost power. The only other time I have seen this message was in Morocco and it was accompanied by every other message and bong known to man, and only happened on hard acceleration. This time it was just cruising along.
There was a large flood that I drove through earlier in the journey, and it made the aux drive belt slip because I heard it squeal as it dried out.
Any ideas?

It wasn't so much wading this morning, more like I went through a big puddle a bit fast and the water splashed up and engulfed the car. It is very wet around Manchester this morning though, so plenty of moisture in the air.

Gareth aren't there aload of electrical connectors under the nearside front wheel arch which are prone to moisture and corrosion might be worth a check

I had ESF 2 days ago read below:-
'Engine system fault appeared and car stopped. Engine would turn over and not start.'
'Fault code: p2290 injector control pressure too low'.
Posted in Maint/Mods, Advised to check fuel pressure in engine bay, no pressure led to pump being changed. Hope its your wires !!

Having used the car on and off all afternoon, I can make the ESF message come on by booting it for a few seconds in any gear. If I back off the gas, the message cycles on and off every 4 seconds, and the car drives normally.
However, if I really boot it, and keep the boot in after the message has come on, it will then go into 'Special Programs Off', TR light flash on the console, and engine looses all power. A restart cures it until next boot full of accelerator.
I suppose I have to consider the TURBO has failed

Yep, if you can make it ESF just by a bit of throttle then you could well have joined CFT!! Get yer tea leaves read, see if there is a turbo overboost error. If you're still on manf warrty get it sorted ASAP.

That's the problem Del, it ran out before Christmas. I have not yet got round to arranging an ongoing warranty.
I was thinking about it (the warranty) last night, and got ESF this morning.
The car was into GS on 7th December for a lot of work on the suspension and diff seals. The warranty ended on the 7th!!!
I'm praying.

Keeping fingers crossed for you. It's probably messing with your mind, they do that.
Good luck; but it sounds just like the HPFP failure which I suffered a few weeks ago!

I was going to say, that apart from the 4second cycle, my repeated ESF were HP pump.
But mine would generally fail at around 2000rpm - though that did increase slightly after about 9months of trying to pin point the fault - or at least the dealer, under warranty!

I found a new fuel filter on my shelf in the garage, so thought I would change the filter. Easy to do, and the filter that was on was the same one that I fitted after Morocco 16mnth ago.
I then went for a spin, and to be honest I thought I had fixed it. I had cruised at 80 - 85 for a good few miles. Then when I came to get off the motorway, I let go the accelerator to slow down and the ESF message came up. Again, no bong or any other message, just ESF every few seconds.
Drove home with the message still showing, no limp mode, but defo down on power below 2000 rpm.
Off to the dealers tomorrow

not entirely same symptoms as mine , indy couldnt find a problem dispite a turbo over boost error , kept cutting out if you booted it
then a few days later lots of black smoke no power , intercooler hose had split , so suspect it had either delaminated or split earlyer on ??
