Archos AV500 hard disk recorder
I am thinking of buying one of these with an external camera. Someone had one in Salisbury the weekend, but I cant remember who it was .
What is the best setup with this system and where is the best place to get one from.
Thanks in advance Duncan

Yes, it was me.
I bought mine direct from Archos, but that was before they were on general release. You can probably get it cheaper elsewhere, an internet should reveal the best prices. The Archos site does have a 'Refurbished' section - there was an AV5100 in there for ages, but I've just checked and it's gone. They are offered with full guarantees and at a great price. Another might reappear though! http://www.archos.com/store/msearch.html?c...id=RFB0070
It's just over half way down the page. There are two there, the first the genuine Archos which is no longer made and the second which I have. I've no links with the site, but received great service there. It was also the cheapest at the time - might not be the case now. They also sell the AV5100 at the same site: http://www.pjbox.co.uk/cgi-bin/ss000002.pl
You would need an in-car charger (or use the supplied one with an inverter), but otherwise that'd give you everything you'd need. You get the TV base, remote, various leads and a charger with the AV5100, and you get the velcro strap with the cam.Disco 5 HSE Lux

I think he's in front of the camera, not behind it. Not that I've watched them......

Thanks DiscoStu,
Will the unit accept input from the miriad of revearsing cameras etc. I was also thinkng of linking up with the cameras I have yet to install for rear view, winch, roof cam etc.
Also, do you get the editing s/w. If not, which one would you recommend..
CheersDuncan

It won't except other cameras. It's a very specific fitting - I'll try and get a photo tomorrow.
No editing software either. Used to use Windows Movie Maker (free) but moved on to Adobe Premiere Pro now - that is a bit more expensive though....Disco 5 HSE Lux

I was looking for an Archos 500 but it seems to have been replaced with a new range. 404, 504 and 604, stu any idea how these new models compare with the 500?

The Archos 404, 504 and 604 will all take the helmet cam, I liked the AV500, we use them as a mobile video recorder on site for recording surveys of sewers, no comments please, as it does not need a docking station you can plug any componet based camera into it through an easily sourced adaptor. I daresay that in a few months time some bright spark will start selling a non manufacturers one for the new models. If I was going to replace one of my work AV500 units I would buy the 604 with the 160 gig hdd, so I could keep my entire music collection on it and still use it to feed videos to my roof mounted DVD player. Hope this helps.D4 HSE Luxury SDV6,

I have the 80GB AV504 myself for about 3 months now, and am really happy with it. It was the only unit at that time that could offer a large capacity hard disk (the 160GB was too expensive for me ). If I look at the Archos site (www.archos.com) the other models (404/604) still seem to be offered with 30GB drives only...
The 404 has a smaller screen, the 604 is 6mm flatter than the 504, and can also be ordered with WiFi included.
I also have the original Archos 'helmet cam' that comes with the travel adapter. The travel adapter can connect to any video camera that has a composite video output, although I needed the Archos video cable to make it work The travel adapter can also be purchased separately, and you would need it (or the mini docking adapter) if you want to connect an external power supply because the base unit itself has no power connector The car charger lead is very handy to have, especially if you want to make long recordings.
I mount the camera on the windscreen using a stripped phone cradle. The 504 itself was more difficult because the unit is quite large, a bit on the heavy side and probably a bit sensitive to shocks. My current solution involves a modified heavy duty PDA cradle and some velcro. I have not taken this setup off-road yet, so I am not sure how well it will work there... 2006 Zermatt Silver TDV6 'SE' Auto, Mantec sump guard, Frontrunner roofrack, Lightforce 140s, split charge system and... a Jetboil.

I've got one of these Audio/Video travel cables
I'm going to try plugging into a camcorder to see if it will record the signal. Don't see why it wouldn't work. What video cable did you mean, Beaker? Disco 5 HSE Lux
