Appalling workmanship form a main dealer EPB

My D4 Commercial had the nearside hand brake shoes replaced under warranty last August just as the warranty run out whilst with the first owner.

I purchased the vehicle in November and soon noticed a squeak when braking. Neither the disk or drum were getting hot and since lr had just worked on the vehicle decided to put the noise down to brake pads which looked new. This week decided to fit new discs and pads on rear. When removed it became obvious they had not adjusted the shoes correctly as the drum and disc were cooked and cracked through the middle. When the drum was removed half the material was missing from the handrake shoe with about a 1 in lump loose on the top of the shoes.

Would you guys put it down to experience or complain to the dealer especially since I did not won the vehicle when the warranty work was done.

If you adjust the shoes with a little too much clearance does it cause the epb unit to deal with too much cable and chew itself up. I am thinking to avoid the same problem again backing off until the drum runs free and not dragging.

I just stick to the process in Bodsy's Brake Bible; as it has always worked I've not tried anything else.

Thumbs Up

As above. Thumbs Up

32mm socket on the hub nut. Tighten knurled adjuster until the hub no longer moves with 60Nm force. Exactly 8 clicks back on the knurled adjuster. Spot on. Thumbs Up

Was it a main dealer and / or LR warranty? If yes to either I would definitely take it up with someone, possibly the LR contact on this forum? If nothing else, LR need to know if their service agents are not performing.

How certain can you see the brakes weren't adjusted correctly, i think the difficulty would be proving some 8 months after the work was done, what mileage has it done in that time?
If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works

Its done about 6,000 miles but either they

1 refitted a badly cracked and warped disc as the fault existed in early November and possibly soon after the work was done.

2 replaced nothing but charged landrover warranty

3 replaced the shoes but got the adjustment wrong

I think they did the work as the no's on the new shoes dont match the other side. The drum has got hot as it has less paint on and the plastic inspection cap has melted.

I have had the vehicle less than six months and in that time I have paid £350 for labour to fit a new front diff. £250 parts and labour to supply and fit a new turbo actuator.

I get the impression from some dealers that its 3 years old and has 68k on the clock its scrap. They look at you like you are mad to run a disco out of warranty which is really worrying.

Getting a bit sick of the keeness of the dealers to get it booked in at £110 and hour for work that has been badly completed by them or should have been done under a recall.

The bodsy brake bible was ace without it I dont think I would have bothered. Thumbs Up

I think the dealer should have it back and sort it. But for the sake of a set of brake linnings and a 60 mile drive. The usual we pay for the parts you pay the £300 labour. In the end do I trust them to put a spanner on my vehicle after the last effort ( not a chance ) . I would rather spend my money with one of the lads on here or a good independant if its beyond my knowledge or tools.

If fitted under warranty only lasts till end of Vechicle warranty, if after warranty then carries 12 months for each part fitted.

Surely if bought from main dealer it has a warranty, 12 months min if an approved car, unless different for commercial variant

Vehicle bought privately from first owner with full land rover history. So I never owned it when in warranty, I never paid for the work and never bought it from a dealer. But the parts they fitted have failed.

I suspect, you would be told to Censored off.

Parts were not fitted under your ownership.
Above that, EPB shoes are a wear and tear item.
You have no way of proving the dealership in question did actually over-adjust them.

I am sure your right but what else would cook the drum or was the drum cooked before they fitted new shoes to one side.

The previous set of shoes could have been seized, causing the drum to discolour

Shame your not down south I think this truck would keep you busy. I can see the purchase of a van with normal handbrake coming on.
