Anything behind the rear bumper?

Greetings,

Yesterday, a Corsa decided to commit hari kari on the towbar of my wife's D4. It was a low speed bump but enough to flex the D4's bumper to a point that the grey 'footgrip' trimon the top partially popped-out. This trim will go back and there are no signs of any damage. Is there anything behind the bumper that might have been squashed / affected (bits of foam, crushable sections, etc.,) and would justify removing the bumper to check? Reversing sensors are OK.

The towbar may have taken the brunt of it, but doing so meant the bump went into the body of the car in a sharp 'bang', rather than a softened 'crump', and didn't do my wife's back much good.

Corsa written-off with damaged bumper, bonnet, wing, radiator, etc.,

I must remember to find the key and see if the towbar will come off again!

Thanks,

Hugh

Do you use the towbar at all?

If it took the force enough to write off the car that went into it then I wouldn't want to pull anything with it until it had been checked.

You must check. The reverse sensor wiring is behind there, in a polystyrene moulding. There might be damage to the wiring and the moulding. There might be broken fasteners that hold the bumper on.

It'd be easy to say there's no damage, forget it, but the problems might crop up for another day.

The other party's insurers have just offered to send round an assessor to give things a kick and offer advice on any bits beyond economic repair. But enough about the wife... ...I'll ask them to check the car as well.

A brave man. You must be pretty sure she won’t see that comment. Never underestimate them! Whistle

If you had the tow bar mounted, then you may well need a new rear cross member due to the stress the crash placed on it. Also do not tow anything until the car has been checked. (Had a simmilar crash on my previous D4). On newer cars (MY14 onward), the radar-sensors for cross traffic sensing are also mounted behind the bumpers. So if you might have to have them checked as well.
