Anyone have an opinion on the LR4 V8 versus the later V6?

I'm wondering about changing my LR3 V8 with the 4.4 engine that I love, for a LR4. Having had a few Discovery 4s in the UK, I miss the additional comfort that the LR4/Disco 4 offers. However, the most recent LR4s in the US were built with a V6 3L engine, whereas the original LR4 build was the 5L V8.

Having had the V8 for a couple of years, I'm concerned that the V6 might not be much fun.

I wondered if anyone had experience of the 5L and 3L (and maybe the 4.4L also) and could offer advice?

Thanks.

I have the 5.0 V8 D4, a mate has the 4.0 V6 D3. I can only compare these, not any newer 3.0 V6 sorry.

Anyway, the 5.0 is an absolute dream. Smooth, powerful and utterly reliable from my experience. In the other hand, the V6 in the D3 has had a host of issues, as have other D3 V6s if you search this forum.

Compared to the old Rover V8s, the Jag engine is in another universe. Double the power, and so much more refined. From what I have heard, it is a noticeable step up from the 4.4 in terms of refinement and delivery of power.

I wouldn't swap my V8 for anything.
 King of the typo.

MY11 D4 5.0 V8, Bournville, lots of goodies!

Now departed: '85 RR Vogue, '94 D1, '95 D1, '70 SIIA, '97 D1, '04 D2a. All V8, except for the SIIA - but that drank as much petrol anyway!

There's a guy on the SA 4x4 Community forum that had a D4 5L and then tested the V6 D4, he said its ok but did not leave him satisfied.

Thanks, guys. Kind of as I expected. I have friends with both the V8 and the V6 and, although they're a fair distance away, I think I'll make it my business to borrow their cars and see for myself. It's probably worth the effort. I like the goodies of the newer model, but am a huge fan of the V8s.

When you are talking about the LR4 V6 I assume you are talking about the Supercharged 3.0 V6.

Just pausing to think how nice it would be to have the option of a 5.0 V8 D4 Very Happy

In Full Fat Land, there’s the choice of either the 3.0 S/C or the 5.0 V8 in the same model year and the 3.0 S/C is not the engine of choice; the TDV6 is generally believed to be a much nicer engine and better matched to the car than the S/C. I’ve never hear a bad word about the 5.0!

(All of the above ignores fuel consumption).

2015 - 2017: 2 x D4

2023 to date: FL2 as a second car

2022 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!
(One of only two known to exist in the world!)

The 5.0 V8 on D4 did/does have a few issues - it’s not prefect. One of them was that the plastic timing chain tensioners and guides go bad and need replacing with an improved version. LTB00474NAS3.

I moved from a TDV6 to a V6 SC and can't complain. The first thing I noticed after stepping into the new car is that the V6 SC does not have that somewhat irritating turbo hole and handles the weight of the D4 fine Very Happy. The V8 would probably be smoother though. And both petrol engines alleviate some of the known TDV6 headaches like snapped cranks, DPF and AGR failures Whistle.

Like Red Merle said, the D4 V8 8 speed would have been the best car Land Rover never built
