| Anyone know of any greenlanes in West Sussex? |

Hi all,
As a newcomer to the site (and Land Rovers) I'm trying to find out more about greenlanes and BOATs in West Sussex, especially in the Chichester area. I've searched various pages with little joy; local authority site doesn't seem to have much either.
Anyone know of any in this area? Or where I can find out more about the law - what I can get away with and what I can't...?!
Grateful for all advice or pointers.

I live on a BOAT, which happily is only open to motor vehicles for a few yards past my house, so I can say I go off-road every day!
Join up with others who have similar interests, possibly some will respond to your post.

Hi Morgan and welcome to the forum. Whenever I feel like a bit off off roading I go up and down Chalk Pit Lane, there are some humpy bits near the top that you can go over if you dare. Best to do it in the evening when less walkers etc. Otherwise don't know of many around Chichester. There is a forum day at Hop Farm Paddock Wood in a couple of weeks, something I'm thinking of going too and proceeds go to charity http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic78533-405.html

Thanks for this. I've mountain biked down Chalkpit Lane and quite fancy driving down it! I can see see it isn't a BOAT, though. Any access issues you're aware of?

Byway Open to All Traffic which means you can legally drive along it. Unfortunately West Sussex County Council have banned motors from almost all rights of way now; from what I can gather there are just 6 miles' worth in the county!
Found this website which is fairly useful, but looks like Surrey and Hampshire are better prospects for greenlaning!

Most of the lanes in West Sussex have been closed, but East Sussex still has some good lanes.
Colwell Lane in Haywards Heath used to be quite good.
It's subject to a seasonal TRO (traffic regulation order) which prevents use in the winter months, but should be open at this time of year.
Might be a bit tight in places, but could be worth a look if you are in the area. Despite the cost of living, it remains as popular as ever!

If you join GLASS, your annual membership not only helps fight councils arbitrarily closing lanes, but gives you access to http://www.trailwise.org.uk/ . There are still plenty of UCRs you can drive, although the future of these is also looking dubious.
Anyone keen on greenlaning should look at joining and helping the fighting fund to take on cases like Chapel Gate I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Just did Chalkpit Lane. Great fun! Some nice ruts about halfway up. Lovely walk at the top around the Trundle.

Hey MorganT, I'm also fairly new to LandRovers (well, 2 weeks in) but have owned a couple of other 4wds in the past. I'm in Croydon and could easily get down to East Sussex, whereabouts is Chalkpit Lane? If you want to tackle it together let me know - perhaps one of the forthcoming balmy evenings?
