Anyone fitted an oil pressure gauge

I am currently looking at buying another D4 to replace mine sold last year and have spotted a potential candidate. Its an above average miles 2012my (130k). I am not a fan of no dipstick and the fact that by the time the oil light comes on the damage could already be done so i was wondering if anyone had fitted an auxiliary oil pressure gauge/warning to there D4?

Something similar to this?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Prosport-Evo-60...Swu1VW4VIl

Would be a pain finding somewhere discreet to fit it but i would hope it might give a bit more warning of impending doom Big Cry
Cheers

Hi Paul,

I see this post is a few months old - did you ever install gauge?

I recently installed one on my D4. The brand is RaceTech but I think they are sold under many different brands. They are made in Taiwan but seem to be of decent quality and accuracy.

It has both a visual and audible warning. You can set the threshold and turn the audible off (When on it self checks every time and is very irritating)

the gauge in mounted to a custom bracket made which is stuck to the flat to the right of the centre vent area with 3M Scotch Hook and Loop Extreme. The gauge is very light and is very secure

The sensor is fitted in place of the factory one as it IMHO, is quite literally useless.

At 105deg C Pressure sits at around 8-9 psi which is normal according to the manual. I have my warning set at 6 psi. I believe the factory light switch is set to bewteen 2 - 5psi for 5 seconds before it will bring on the light.

I have been looking at this:-

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Prosport-60mm-4...0677.m4598

A 4 in 1 60mm Prosport 4-1 Multi Display Gauge - Oil Pressure (Bar), Oil Temperature (°C), Water Temperature (°C) , & Voltage.

but have yet to do anything. I would prefer to see oil pressure in PSI not Bar.

I can't find the thread, but Joe from Oval Autos posted some details of their test rig which is very relevant.

I have thought about doing this too. I’m surprised at the low oil pressure! Is that 6-9 psi at idle or revs?

Also, as mentioned by Oval Autos, is that the head measurement or the filter?

My S2 has 60psi at revs, and even manages 40 at idle.

I'm a little bit OCD in the sense that I like to keep things neat, tidy and stock in the cabin. For example, a water bottle in the door bin or an air freshener stuck on the vent would drive me nuts. (Yes, I know, I have a problem Laughing ) A non-stock gauge on the dash therefore wouldn't be an option for me.

So, my ideal thing to have would be some audible alarm mounted under the dash to give an indication that something is wrong which would enable me to pull over in time.

Gareth,

I get 8-9psi at hot idle 700RPM with oil less than 3000km old. Bare minimum in my opinion too, not much room for error... The manual says above 7 is acceptable. I'd be much more comfortable with 15-20 at idle.

What does it climb to at higher revs?

12psi @ 1000rpm
22psi @ 2000rpm
35psi @ 3000rpm
45psi @ 4000rpm

The pressure is acceptable but it is on the low side in my opinion. I can only imagine and cringe at what the pressure would be like on 15000-20000km old oil, in a 100000km + engine. Whistle Whistle Whistle

Might explains why the tappets seem noisy at tick over.
