Anyone else had their disco remapped for economy over power?
I’m curious to know if any of you have remapped your disco for improved economy?
I love owning and driving mine, but I do have a sense of guilt because of the terrible fuel efficiency, high CO2 and the environmental impact of it. With this in mind I got in touch with a company that specialises in LR remaps and asked what they could do to help.
2 days later he came to my house and worked his voodoo magic on the car. I don’t know exactly what he did, but I do know he reset the gearbox’s computer that learns the driving style so it now changes gear at much lower revs. I was expecting a loss of power, but it seams I now have more low end torque which is great!
Below is a rough comparison of economy before and after
1. Town mpg 17 - 22
2. Motorway mpg 19 - 36
3. Range on tank 350 to 400 - 500 to 600
Have any of you matched this or better?12 months of D3 ownership have passed and I’m still loving it!

I had mine remapped for power and economy and have seen my mpg go from 22 to 26mpg on my journey to work. this has been averaged over the last two years after having the remap and is worked out from the amount of fuel used not from the trip computer.
When they install a new map it also resets the trip computer and you get very varied readings on the dash.
I am sure i would get more mpg but i like to put my foot down when accelerating and the extra power most likely uses more fuel.
I am off work for the next two weeks and will be using my LR for day trips so will see what mpg i get on longer journeys but i knew what mpg to expect when i bought mine and have just hot used to fiĺing it up. Some of the cars i have owned in the past have had a liot worse mpg.Andrew

Adam are you calculating the consumption yourself or taking it from the trip calculation?

I have only been using the trip computer. The remap was actually completed back in mid-June, for the first week or so afterwards I was seeing crazy numbers, at one point my average MPG was reading 90, then it would drop below 15 under heavy acceleration.
I went to Scotland on the 6th and came home yesterday, the trip computer displayed 32mpg consistently in both directions12 months of D3 ownership have passed and I’m still loving it!

Might be worth doing your own calculation just to have a comparison. I don't do any city driving but I get around 27mpg on rural roads with no modifications.
The trip say's I'm getting 32 to 37 mpg yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

I’m travelling to slough this weekend to visit family, if the traffic is ok that should be a good journey to record mpg.
How do I go about getting accurate data?12 months of D3 ownership have passed and I’m still loving it!

Fill your tank to the brim.
Reset your mileage trip meter to zero.
Next time you fill up (again to the brim), check your mileage figure. For the most accurate reading try to use most of the tank to give you the widest range.
Convert the litres it took to fill the car into gallons (litres divided by 4.545) (litres shown on your receipt).
Divide mileage (from trip reading) by gallons (calculated above).
Now you have MPG that was really achieved "Track day running - Don't put your foot back on the accelerator until your absolutely sure you don't have to take it off again"

Get a fuel app. Myself and many others here use the free Road Trip MPG Lite. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

if you're bothered about MPG, change vehicle.
I keep an eye on the lie-o-meter just as a rough guide to engine health..

That is the price of buying an almost 3 Tonne vehicle (with 4 or five people in it) with the cw rating of a garden shed, if the other subjects are important to you, change vehicle…. Not a “remap” that sounds like “feel good money”
You can’t have both…
Though remaps kan “help” it is the right foot who dictates the feul flow..
Resetting a autobox ecu, is temporary measurement, since it will adapt very soon to your driving style.
So again you are the key yourself.. imho..Best regards

I had a remap from the well respected Bell Auto Services on my previous D3 many years ago, specifically asking to improve economy.
Never understood why anyone wouldn’t want to make a good thing better/more liveable with. Yes a Discovery is never going to be a fuel miser but for a million reasons why would anyone have no interest in improving what is clearly one of its relative downsides?
Long term (6+ years) I can confidently say my average went from 22mpg (I rarely do long runs in my Discovery) to 24.5mpg (stubbornly always on that .5!!). In summer a bit better, in winter a bit worse.
On a long run I’d fall into 30-34 mpg just for that run. As mentioned, the right foot has a lot to do with it and if you specifically want to drove for economy, being aware of what your nstant mpg will add another 3 or so mpg
Have to say though I’d be amazed if your initial numbers turn out to be accurate
However modest the mpg gain, the map did massively improve the driveability, felt more powerful in all phases of acceleration, overtaking felt so much more assured and it no longer lagged pulling away from roundabouts. And was only £15 per year extra on insurance.
Have to also say unlike it seems a few on here my fuel computer always matched brim to brim checks so I had no experience of that being inaccurate but I agree, to be certain, brim to brim with a trip reset is the only way. The bigger the refill, the more accurate its likely to be.
If you are keeping the car long term as I did the payback was certainly achieved mathematically at the pump but in reality it made the car so much better to drive over 6 years, that the fuel gain ended up being something of a secondary benefit.

Call me a sceptical bar steward, but I have always been in the you cant have something for nothing camp.
If it really worked every commercial vehicle operator would be having their vehicles remapped for economy.
I know a man who did this for a massive company, so big that they run thousands of vehicles, his job was to download ecu info, then email it to the tuner company who then emailed it back to be uploaded to the ecu, the best part was the man said half the time the new map would not work or the laptop would not talk to the van, so he just reloaded the original map and sent it out exactly as it came in!

I’m beyond convinced the gains are very real and the reality is loads of companies do this - witness your contact/mate. Completely recognise the perils of hooking up laptops to cars, files not loading occasionally but the truth is big companies rarely spend money on snake oil. Not for long anyway. Has to give a return or it just wouldn’t be done.
I don’t think its a mystery at all. The manufacturers have so many other targets to hit beyond mpg, to get their emissions in certain parameters, often across several sets of regulations etc that they have to hit a sweet spot of compromise. The aftermarket re-mapper gets to choose a completely different balance and no one checks his homework from a regulations perspective . No question on benefit for me.Corris Grey SDV6 D4 2015 HSE
