Another strange engine noise question
Hi all, I searched through the forum and though there was a long list of returned results, i could not see any close to description for my queries.
I did find a video online which had a clearer sound recording of the weird noise. (not my car and credits to video owner "Simon Harding")
Situation:
The noise only appears when i start the car. Initially i thought it was due to damp and cold, so I parked it in the garage overnight and next morning the sound (sharp) is so loud I was worried it might wake the neighbours up. The sound is sporadic, i do not hear it whilst driving or idling at lights.. I was told it could be idler belt tensioner but I thought if that's the culprit, you would hear it everytime and not just when I just fired up the engine.
I recently had the timing belt, serpentine belt, pulleys (not tensioners) water pump done by an indy. I have the 2008 TDV6 which had the stronger oil pump casing.
If I can get some brain trust response, it be fantastic.. thanks in advance.

Hi, mine does the same but I need to replace the alternator and I assume its the bearing or something on the alternator. Have you checked your alternator voltage?Discovery 4 GS 2009 Auto Stornoway Grey

One way clutch on the alternator seized, giving the belt tensioner a hard time.Richard

Is that likely to have damaged the tensioner? Is it worth getting the tensioner done as well as the alternator?Discovery 4 GS 2009 Auto Stornoway Grey

Easy check, take the aux belt off the alternator pulley, and see if the one way clutch works. If it's seized, probably best change the tensioner and belt.Richard

Thanks all for the suggestions... As an update, I started the engine with the fan cowl off, i could see the bottom belt tensioner vibrating as the belt moves. The top tensioner is solid, no movements at all. I uploaded the video. Is the amount of movement normal?
I also know part of the diagnosis is to take the belt off and run the engine to see if there is any sound. Now this is the silly question, If the belt and fan is left off when I start the engine, would it cause any issue to the engine? I'd imagine there be some fault codes which I am not fussed about as I have a reader to clear it later.
Also with the one way clutch on the alternator, how would I test/diagnose it? do i hand turn the alternator pulley and check for resistance or no resistance?
Thanks all again..

I dont think running with the belt off will cause any damage short term, but you'll have no power steering or cooling, so careful if you want to move it, and if you leave it running it'll over heat which can cause issues.
Im only going by mine which has been shipped off to the garage today after the aux belts come loose, with a suspected tensioner dropping its guts.... I was able to drive home, albeit with a mild steam cloud for the last half of the journey.........

Just to close this thread off.. the amount of vibration on the belt tensioner is normal. They do move a bit as in the video.
I had removed the tensioner, greased the bearings and lubricated the springs in the tensioner arm. All good now, no more chirping noise. There was no free play and the bearings aren't worn, though the bearings were dry as a bone before I packed new grease in.
To pack grease in, you have to remove the oranged colour dust cover-gasket thing, only issue is trying to fit the dust cover back in. I couldn't. So having found the culprit, I have ordered a replacement which should arrive in a weeks time.
The belt and alternator is fine. The voltage charge is normal as alternator was replaced recently and is fairly new.

I think you must be happy that the seal could not be replaced... believe me... the bearing was damaged if bone dry.... for a roller bearing one drop of oil is enough, but without that last drop, it is damaged..
If it seizes, everything damages, In the neighbourhood, maybe even the Other Belt...Best regards
Harold
