This happens if the cable isn't quite plugged in fully (At either end). It would also happen if the cable was a bit dodgy.

I have been fiddling with the hole just now and.....I felt the rim and it was all smooth, subject to a bit grime, which has been duly cleaned away with a kleenex. I have also put in a cotton bud to wipe the smears away. Put it in and it didnt feel right, a bit grainy. I put a bit of cleaner on the male part and inserted it a couple of times and it works fine. The pleasure of banging tunes on the D3!
