Another day, another P2288-00
I'd been having an Engine System Fault warning flash up with an associated limp mode but only temporarily. I had neen living with it because I was only doing short runs and was more concerned with other faults (suspension - now fixed).
A couple of things have happened that has focussed my attention.
It has got a lot worse. I have changed 5/6 glow plugs and while the engine starts way better than when I had 1/6 working I was concerned I had upset something in the process.
I got an IID tool
Now I can seen the fuel pressure value doing some thing funny. When I slowly increase revs the fuel pressure stays fairly constant with no ESF but when I blip the throttle the pressure shoots up and gives an ESF warning.

The next image shows the engine revs and fuel pressure at idle. There is clearly a relationship going on. If I zoom in I think I can see that it's the engine speed that is the cause and the fuel pressure is the effect because each little increase in revs is slightly ahead of the drop in fuel pressure. This is intermittant at idle and it feels like the engine misfires when it happens.

So what do you think? Is this one fault or two?
Here's my hypothesis. I'm suspecting two faults at the moment. One being that the fuel pressure switch on the fuel rail behind the HPFP is the cause of the ESF and a faulty injector is the cause of pic 2 .
BTW it's a 2006 manual.2016 D4 SDV6 Landmark

I am not a diesel mechanic, but the first picture seems to indicate that the pressure is doing the right thing i.e following the throttle request.

Well it seems to only be an issue when cold. Today I let the engine get up to temperature for an hour (I forgot it was running) then went for a drive. There were no EMF bong bongs and the graph of fuel pressure v. engine speed looks more like I'd expect. I took this image while stationary.

P2288 only when cold
Hi, I also have the same problem, once the engine is warm I can reset fault by switching ignition off and then on again.
Have you resolved the issue??

Yes, I have resolved the P2288 and the associated limp mode.
The answer was a new high pressure fuel pump, well actually a used one from a breaker on eBay.
It was from a Jaguar X type and cost me £180 on top of that I had the cost of a new drive belt and tensioner kit plus a replacement oil seperator thingy that broke on its way out.
If you are changing the HPFP it's a good time to change the heater plugs.
I've yet to take the old HPFP apart out of curiosity, it's a rainy day job so it should happen very soon.2016 D4 SDV6 Landmark

Thanks, I will be taking mine to an Indy soon, and will first try the replacement of diesel filter and pipes to ensure there is no blockage. If that does not work it will have to be the HPFP.
It is just so strange that it is only a problem when it is cold, or in the first 10km of driving!!
