Hi Matt,

Thanks for that. I must admit that without any obvious date on it, I did just assume it to be original.

Still, I've swapped it now, so if the new one cures the problem then I won't feel too bad.

Haven't heard from you for a while. Your D4 being boringly reliable?

Yep D4 is not behaving at the moment, it's 18 months old now. Shocked

It's got more dash rattles than yours Confused but overall it's not been as good as the old one.

Certain bits annoy me against the D3, the up and down gear lever is just stupid and the Evoque mirrors are nowhere near as good as the old ones.

Sorted out the various 'stuff' that seems to accumulate in the boots of Land Rovers with a pair of Really Useful Boxes. I was going to go for a couple of Wolf boxes via the group buy that's running at the moment, but in the end was put off by the poor catches and the need to plug holes in the bottom Confused

These boxes are roughly the same size, albeit slightly shallower, but come with nice robust catches and were half the price, so will do the job nicely:

Prompted by the group buy for a jack adapter, I ordered myself a new trolley jack at a black Friday bargain price, which turned up today:

For the record, these pictures were taken in my hallway - I haven't carpeted my garage!

I must confess that it's a bit of a beast. It was chosen for its' load rating but I didn't take a lot of notice of the size and weight of the thing! Anyway, it's a very solid bit of kit that I'm sure will last for the rest of my life Shocked

Windscreen Washers

My jack adapter arrived and very nice it is, too. Haven't had chance to try it yet though Rolling Eyes

However, I did make time to swap my windscreen washers for the later D4 versions today:

First job is to remove the sound insulation from the underside of the bonnet with a trim removal tool:

This then reveals the washer pipework and cables:

Snip the cable tie holding the pipe onto the washer and pull the pipe free. Squeeze the connector to disconnect the cable and then squeeze the plastic spring clip on the washer intself to enable it to be passed through the hole in the bonnet. Replacement is the reversal of removal except for needing a new cable tie Whistle

I'll have to wait until the frost eventually arrives to test them properly, but they squirt in the right place:

Xenon Headlight Bulbs

Also replaced the bulbs in my recently acquired xenon headlights on the basis that they were probably fitted with the originals.

Bought a pair from eBay for £44 and they work a treat.

New one on the left:

Also took the opportunity to update the CCF with my IID to tell it that it now has xenons fitted, which has stopped the brief flicker on start up.

Fitted a new battery today - an Exide Premium from Tayna, of course.

I've been having some odd issues when the temperature is below about 5 degrees and a weak battery appeared to be the obvious cause. As the existing one looks to be the original, a new one seemed to be a good idea. Just need some cold weather now to test the theory.

With the temp. below 5 degrees for the first time in ages this morning, it started without any dramas or warning messages, so the new battery seems to have done the trick Very Happy This is despite me playing around with both the headlights and the IID yesterday afternoon.

January was an expensive month. Had it booked in for a new torque converter and ended up with reconditioned gearboxes, too. Along with a new rear prop, it was the best part of £3.5k Shocked

I was hoping that the new TC might give me an improvement in MPG but, if anything, it's been the opposite and over the last couple of fill ups, it's fallen off a cliff. It's due a service soon but, in the meantime, I thought I'd replace the MAP and ECT sensors to see if it made any difference.

Both parts were ordered from Advanced Factors and whilst the ECT sensor is a LR part, the MAP sensor came in Citroen packaging:

With the engine cover removed, the MAP sensor is easily accessible in the top centre of the engine:

It's secured with a single star drive bolt and then is simply pulled out.

The new part is slightly different to the original:

The ECT sensor is also easy to get to and is located immediately behind the fan cowl:

This sensor is removed by a quarter anti-clockwise turn and then pulls out. It's set into a coolant line and a small amount escaped when it was released, but not enough to be concerned about.

The old sensor does look rather worse for wear, so I'm hopeful that it's the cause of my poor MPG:

Afterwards, it fired up and ran nicely and a quick test drive felt quite promising. I've got more of a run planned tomorrow, so I'll have to see how it goes.

Surprised didn't really cover it at the time. The problem was worn splines on the shafts that link the two boxes. Because it's the main shaft through the 'box, they said the only way to replace it was a full recon. At the time, it was on around 119k (just ticked over 120k this week).

Unfortunately LRs don't leak like they used to. Sad
