Annoying droning or whining noise at 70 mph -Manual Gearbox

I've searched the forum and can find various references to this type of issue but there does not seem to be one that fits my exact circumstances!

Driving at 70mph there is a slight droning/whining noise which is speed dependent (it sounds a bit like aggressive types or tyre slap type noise) - if you go below 50 is is not really there and if you go faster it seems to reduce - the car is manual so I tried dipping the clutch at which point the noise disappears completely. Car has done 67k

So my thoughts are that it is unlikely to be a wheel bearing as this would continue as the car continued to coast and the same consideration rules out the tyres being the cause.

It could point to gearbox or transfer box but then there appear to be other posts that indicate it might be the front diff - with the clutch dipped there is no acceleration or driving force so would this silence the diff? Then again there are other posts that consider this sort of noise normal - am I looking for issues that don't exist its not that loud but I sure it didn't used to be there!!

No other diff symptoms such as when turning or maneuvering

No fault codes present

Hi,
when my t, box failed the noise began at approx 25/30 mph and is then noisy at all times regardless of clutch position or if coasting in neutral, although the noise tone would change a bit depending on load. If low range is selected the noise was much worse, although this is not always the case. If the noise stops when depressing the clutch I do not believe (in my experience)it is the t, box. You mention tyres, my AT's when worn, start droning at 50 ish and the noise is quieter nearer 70 ish, but I don't remember dipping the clutch making a difference. Wheel bearings usually increase in noise when turning. I seem to remember a worn front diff' changing noise with power on, or power off, (over run) not when dipping the clutch, but I'm not sure, and see where you are coming from.

Hopefully more experienced members will provide more information.

Andi.

I have this exact sound too! Mines an auto, when I let off the accelerator it goes but comes back the instant I put power on! I have looked at the wheel bearings and no play or hotness, the diff seems solid! I'm a little lost to what it could be.

Propshaft centre bearing is worth checking. The do fail sometimes.

Thanks for the replies - I replaced the propshaft at about 37k as one of the universal joints was leaking and they are unrepairable but its any easy one to check so will have a look when I get a chance

Any progress on this?
I have the exact same sound on my manual SE.
It started 2 weeks ago gradually when towing the boat on the motorway.
The noise is only present when accelerating from about 30mph up to 70mph. When off the accelerator and coasting its silent.
Thumbs Up

No unfortunately not - its definitely not the prop shaft as had a look at that whilst fixing the compressor dryer at the weekend

I think it's the road surface in the UK

On holiday in France this year it didn't appear to do it at all - can't really explain that as it doesn't take into account putting the clutch down and the sound going away but there you go

Change the front diff oil and examine what comes out. If there are metal flakes in the oil, the bearings are on the way out. I'm rebuilding my front diff tomorrow as I have the noise and metal in the oil.

I had the same noise on my L405 and it was the Transfer Box.
