ALTOX FBH suddenly eating data!

OK so the ALTOX remote FBH in the wife's D3 has worked well all winter and usually uses none of the PAYG data bundle on the Vodafone sim card.

All of a sudden a few days ago the FBH stopped communicating so I checked Vodafone account and the plan had no credit left?

Anyway I added £5 and all was good again.

Three days later the FBH wont start this morning. I check the account and there are two debits for £2 and one for £1 so out of credit again.

I add another £5 this morning and FBH starts immediately.

So what has changed and why is FBH sim suddenly eating data?

my Altox uses, in the winter months, at most, 50-60 MB. Unless you are in an area with little/weak signal where Altox tries to transmit data without succeeding.

But anyway with values not higher than 80-90MB

My IOT SIM card has 100MB per month and I have never managed to consume it over 60MB even "playing" with the App

A friend of mine recently started using all his monthly broadband allowance. I popped round to see if I could help (was checking for things like Amazon Fire playing videos after the TV was switched off etc). There was a load of traffic on the network so we ended up unplugging things to see if we could stop it. In the end we found an internet connected watering kit for some chillis in the greenhouse. It had a cheapy Chinese chipset that had a known vulnerability and was being used maliciously and was racking up data. With a massive growth in all sorts of things being connected to the internet, we'll start to see many more of these sorts of exploits. Wouldn't surprise me at all if your device was being used in a similar way. At this point I run out of technical knowledge, but it would be interesting to see if you can get a log of internet activity.

Are you saying that this will use data even though data transfer has not succeeded?

I wouldn't have thought the Altox would take "chunks" of credit like that, £2 in one go (twice) is odd.

Why are Vodafone are charging you £1/MB - that's robbery Shocked

You need to contact Vodafone and see what's going on from their end. They may have "upgraded" your PAYG offering Rolling Eyes

I don't know what "deal" your £5 credit gives you, but it looks like either it's now charging you for data - or you've suddenly got a data signal available where you live and the Altox is using it!

I just checked it apparently £2 a day!!!!

However I put £5 or £10 on and it normally lasts a couple of months even 3 or 4? All the transactions usually show £0 next to them. SEE SECOND PIC ABOVE LOADS OF TRANSACTIONS AT £0

I just went online Chat and the guy was not helpful just said data plan was £2 a day?????????

They have given me £5 back so will see what happens over next few days or its off to Mr GIFFGAFF....

EDIT: GiffGAff ordered

I’ve had the same problem with a payg SIM card on vodafone, they now default on a tarif that you pay no more than £1 a day, they don’t tell you it costs you £1 a day every day you use it though. Don’t know if you can change but if you’ve got a good signal at home I would suggest a giffgaff SIM card, by far the cheapest way of doing it.

Did anyone get to the bottom of this?

I’ve just topped up my Giff Gaff sim with £10 to get my Altox going again and it’s consumed about £7.50 in about 10 minutes.

I could watch the numbers going down in the giff gap app. I managed to disconnect the Altox before it emptied the credit.

This isn’t a new instal, it worked perfectly last winter. Just the credit had run out or expired, so I topped it up this morning.

Any ideas?

Are you in an sms loop where any text received free on the altox is forwarded to your phone, causing giffgaff credit to drop by 20p which sends your altox a credit update, which gets forwarded to your phone, which ...

There's a thread on here where we discussed it, the fix AND getting your credit restored by giffgaff
