have no intension of putting a spanner near our newish d4.....happy at my age to let the stealer do it all.peace if mind I guess

If you replaced the battery as part of the job the BMS should be reset. Probably a bit early to think of such things!

TdV6 Fan Removal

Here's my method for removing a reluctant fan..

I cut a 25mm square steel tube down to 545mm and placed it between one of the bolt heads and the cross-member directly below.

I did my mates alternator tonight - this guide was a god send.
The fan was ridiculously tight. Tried all the methods on here, when I braced the pully against the bottom crossmember the engine was lifting when trying to undo or shock the spindle !
In the end I used a double ended ratchet spanner over one of the 3 bolts near the spindle and the other over the pully to the right of the spindle - big wacks and it finally came off.
Once the fan was out of the way, the job was a piece of cake.

Thanks to all for the top tips Thumbs Up

Alternator Replacement

Thanks for this post Andy.

I have successfully taken out, repaired and replaced my alternator. Place that repaired my alternator is http://alternators-starters.co.za/contact-us/. You can speak to Dirk. Most helpful people. Phoned around for new alternator and everyone said it is a sealable unit and you don't get spaires to repair it. Truck and car spares had all the spares and they can repair the Disco 3 alternator. Took me 1h to take out the alternator, half a day for Truck and car spare to repair the alternator and another 1h for me to put back the alternator. Price to repair the alternator R1710.

No more battery light on my Disco 3.

Thanks for the post, Very good. My alternator went on me when I was working in the UK, I had to take it to the Stealership in Suffolk. It cost £808.74 to fix. For something I could fix at home for around €200.00

Cheers Methley and others. In and out in easily well under an hour. Mind you my belts had been done recently so my fan co-operated very easily. Your guide certainly made a difference

Most helpful thank you.
Struggled getting the fan off, in the end I used a big C spanner to lock onto 2 of the small nuts' and the big one came off fairly easy in the end
taking it to be repaired tomorrow. Thumbs Up

alternator definitely gone?

so many diy jobs racking up I'm losing the will -

Short drive today and after stop no re-start and battery flat. I had LCD and audio flicker yesterday with parking break fault warning so know something was coming

AA out and new battery fitted (I had bought one seeing as mine was still the original after 9 years). After fitting the battery was registering a drain of approx. 1 amp? Upon re-start no charge was registering and diagnosed alternator gone

Short drive home and battery warning light went out after few seconds. Car now on drive with battery disconnected. I am now wondering if alternator has definitely gone seeing as the light went out (I had no battery warning light previously before flat)??

Clutching at straws but does a new battery take some time to register or something along those lines? New alternator was fitted only a year or so ago by main stealer under ext warranty (which I no longer have). AA said it was not genuine LR part and looked like cheap aftermarket - why would main dealer do this?? Not naming names at the moment but not a happy bunny!! Would I have a case for a winge at the dealer?

If it has definitely gone then are there any other issues that could have caused it to go? I do have suspected pkg sensor wiring issue along with my gear linkage problem Big Cry

Any advice would be appreciated
Cheers
Steve

A new battery doesn't take time to register.

But was it fully charged? A new battery doesn't necessarily mean a fully charged one.
Put it on charge for a while and see what happens.
Also check what voltage the alternator is putting out when running.

AA read 11.19 just after battery fitted. Nothing changed under revs
Reading was off of battery. Would it be down if not fully charged i.e get better when charged / if battery warning light went out was alternator working/charging it?

It does sound like alternator has failed. It should have a guarantee on the part do although out of dealer warranty you may have case under manufacturers warranty. As for why they may have fitted cheap part I guess that is their choice as their cost unless warranty stayed genuine parts.
