I've just replaced my alternator and am looking at overhauling the old one.
Whilst fiddling with it, I've noticed that it seems to have some kind of clutch as turning one way allows the shaft to turn and the fan slip whilst turning the other way engages the fan.
Is that normal.
Would someone mind checking which way the alternator turns with the engine running, please. (I'm away from home for a few weeks so can't check. I've got the old alternator with me as a bit of free time project).
Anyone overhauled one of these? Any tips for a new comer?
Cheers

I had that clutch operation you describe in both the old and new one (just replaced mine). And like you I was curious to see if it could be taken apart and rebuilt, by me that is. So I removed all the screws I could find but still couldnt open it up. Didnt manage to get the pulley off either as I couldnt find a proper tool for that. Ended up finding a hammer and breaking some plastic bits in frustration and then gave up. Luckily I didnt have to return the old as exchange unit

dangermouse,
Assuming your old alternator stopped charging. From my reading about others failures , the rectifier diodes seem to fail before brushes and other items require attention. Sometime shorting out the battery to ground, so heat damage may affect other parts.
To allow me and others to do what I'm sure is a fairly quick easy and cheap diode replacement job.
Could you please have a look for any makers mark and identification numbers for these diodes.
There may be a bank of up to six of them attached to some sort of heat sink.
At least a search on these will provide a clue to costs and availability, etc.
Many thanks.
Nick.

I've just had mine changed. I was told by my local indie (and think I've read somewhere on the site) that the diodes are not available for this specific alternator so it can't be repaired.
My local indie wouldn't bullsh*t me on this - he repaired the alternator on my Volvo last year - but if that is not right I'm sure someone will be along to put me right. Dec 04 TDV6 HSE in Tonga green with Alpaca interior.

Jeez, I'm fairly handy with the tools but I just can't figure out how this comes apart.
The diode pack just seems to be installed for life and not designed to be removed.
Anyone had these apart?

I really don't understand LR The MM alternators of the RR Classis,D1/2 and now the D3 Denso just seem to be difficult or impossible to repair or get spares for At least the MM on my RR Classic lasted 230000Km before I had it serviced before a long trip to faraway places.Getting a sparky that was prepared to do it was quite a mission.....no/difficult spares availability. Now the D3 alternater let go at 112000km's...........without warning!!Thought I will keep it to have it repaired as a spare to take on trips,as the D3 does not get very far without good electrics.Spares stonewall The fact that it was Denso gave me hope for better quality, but no!!Looking on this forum they certainly dont last as long as on Toyotas!!!!I feel cheated,as I take this car deep into the bush where spares are a problem Otherwise a wonderful car but I must be able to depend on the design.I am capable of helping my self, but then you need the parts in your spares box:oops: Yes,I have a Faultmate to assist me,and most spares like EAS compressor Big Country RR,NL Split Charge,FR Sump Guard,TP Monitor,BAS map
