Alternator removal from below or above?

I have a good set of ramps to give me some good lift but can the alternator be removed from underneath or does it have to come out through the top with fan and cowling coming off?
My Saturday project

Cheers

Top. Fan off (using the proper fan tools) cowling off. Still a bit fiddly, but doable.

I found it easy doing it from the top, then @ 6ft + & having worked on Lightnings for 13 years I should. Thumbs Up

Cheers guys.

So the screw driver and 36mm spanner and a hammer is not classed as propper fan tools Very Happy which is what i think i used when removing a viscous fan about 15 years ago on the origional disco.

The fan must have been of in April last year for timing belts that were replaced by previous owner? so it should not need to much coaxing?

You might just be lucky, and get the fan undone easily. Or, you might damage something with the hammer and screwdriver! Shocked

If only it was so easy

I spent yesterday trying to get my alternator out.

Started from the top. But I lacked a 36m spanner. So watch some videos and restarted from the bottom. Not, the car is not on ramps...

Got the alternator loose, plug too hard to remove. So tracked down a 36m spanner and eventually got it off.

Now I had better access to the plug and removed it.

But still cannot get the alternator out as too many cooling pipes in the way. And steering bits block the bottom access.

So am about to start day two to see what more of the car I can pull apart to get the job done.

Would not be so bad if my defender's clutch slave cylinder failed 4 days after the alternator on my D4.

Confused

This is about as far as I got as well.

Anyone have some tips on how to get the radiator cowl off? Seems like there are way more hoses etc on the SDV6 vs TDV6 Sad
