Hi all,
I have a 05 TDV6 and the alternator looks like it's given up the ghost.
Dual battery set up helped me for a while but alas once the batteries got down to 11.5 odd volts I could not start the car.
Called the Road Patrol to diagnose the problem, jump started Ok and tested the alternator for output - 10.5 volts!
Charged the started battery overnight to get the car down to my mechanic, they mentioned that the early D3's have a alternator life of about 120,000 k's.
Better in latter vehicles so I'm told is this true?

I believe Land Rover experience replace them every 6 weeks. Although that's as a precaution as they get a dunking daily. I suspect yours had just got to the end of its natural life D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Mine died at about the same km. (When I say died, I mean imploded, taking the battery with it!)
The 05's had an issue with the alternator. Sme were replaced much earlier.
The replacement one was a newer build and charges better. It was only after fitting it that I realised the original one didn't ever charge properly.
Cost me $800 for the alternator and i replaced it myself. Have a nice day!

The one on my 03 L322 4.4 V8 just died at about 30K.
Some immense water cooled thing it is apparently.
The price from the local dealer for the replacement part was about 880 GBP
Must say "Mr Fusion" on the side then i guess
My mate who has recently done 3 and so had one in stock that he threw one on as a favour, will be happy as long as i get him a replacement. Thats how business is done in Cyprus
Nick is of course sorting me one out for about half that which i think is a lesson that everyone should take note of.

On the home screen hold your finger against the centre of the top for 5 seconds, then press the left button below the screen. Release and the code pad will appear. My Alternator light came on last week while camping at The Pines Campground in the Olney State forest near Newcastle. I thought i was in real trouble. The light stayed on for some time but went off by the time i got to the freeway and it hasn't come on since. I popped into the LR dealer in Sydney: Said it was charging low. I bought a new alternator just in case it failed but it got home OK. The fault code was P0625 Generator Field Terminal Circuit Low... Alternator cost $800.... Will have a crack at replacing it myself soon. My vehicle just ticked over 130000 KM
BTW State of Origin was excellent

These alternators are made by Denso.
If they die they can easily be repaired in a nick of time for a few pounds and it will last you many years. It's a waste of money to buy a new one...........imho......... CLUB ILLEGAL CAR WASHERS

Battery light came on 2 days ago, got it booked into Land Rover telling them the alternator had gone, they said they would need to diagnose the problem, low and behold...the alternator has gone! They have ordered 1 so should be there tomorrow! Also replacing the tailgate gate latch that now needs hitting before it releases the little handle to be pressed! Lovely jubbly!

Whoops!
That is what I wanted to know
My 07 D3 4.4 v8 has done around 54k miles (92K kms), having finished a round the world tour with 4K Miles (68K Kms) before I bought it.
Might be doing an alt rebuild very soon to avoid future issues
The D3 V8 alt is part number YLE500190 or YLE500390, and corresponds to Denso parts number 4280003690 or 4280003691
Best regards.

Alternator Rebuild - which parts, mechanical / electrical? |
|
When one says "Alternator Rebuild", what does that mean?
Does that mean ordering bearings and the replacement thereof, or is it more than that such as electical parts?
I guess what I am asking is what normally goes bad when the Alternator quits, and therefore what should one be replacing before one has any problems.
I have the NAS LR3 with the gasloine 4.4l V8 which is I assume the Land Rover part number YLE500390 alternator. 2005 LR3 HSE 4.4L AJ-V8 petrol; Traxide Dual Battery; PIAA 2500K Yellow Ion H11 Fog Light bulbs; CounterAct LT-2 Capacitive Corrosion control; LLumar AIR80 Blue clear Infra Red blocking side window film; Liftgate manual release; Schrader Valve "air in" mod to OEM air suspension reservoir tank; Akebono ceramic pads; OEM solid vented discs; LR4 design hitch receiver; Wiggs D4 MOST bluetooth module; Clock on the Dash; 3 Flash signal light mod; Backup Camera; 2015/16 Nav Data update.

When an alternator 'goes bad' it can be a number of things. I would guess that the top 2 failures would be a bearing failure (can be a noisy or rather sudden failure) or worn brushes (a more gradual decline in performance). The good news is that they are pretty east to repair and both bearings and brushes are cheap.
Before I moved 'up north' there was a company around the corner that repaired alternators for about £50 and they could arrange removal and installation at a local garage for an additional fee if you are a mechanical dunce (like me). They referred to their trade as 'Rotating Electrics' rather then anything more google-obvious.
