Alternator Failure

Following on from my failed battery last week, today I fitted the new battery. Very Happy

Started the car and checked the charge.. Not charging! Confused No message centre warnings! Confused Smoke coming from vicinity Alternator. Shocked Evil or Very Mad Big Cry

Rang LR and it seems that the collapse of the battery does something to the Alternator. Confused

Guess what I'm doing this weekend! Censored
 Have a nice day!

Don't know! Once I've removed it I'll see if it can be repaired and use it as a spare.

Ouch! That's scary. Shocked Shocked Shocked

Do you know why your battery collapsed? Or should we all be prepared to replace the alternator every time the battery goes?

The first battery just died slowly and did nothing to the car.

This one collapsed all at once. I'd say it was faulty to start with, although battery construction is something I don't really know much about.

Got the fan off tonight. Used a thin screwdriver to hold the viscous thingy in place and then used an adjustable spanner on the nut. Came loose first pop.

I made up a tool that locates on to two of the bolts and goes aroond the thermostatic fan shaft to lock the pulley while I worked on the fan nut. That was while I was designing the drive takeoff for the winch pump.
