Alternator?

So I left my car at airport parking for a week and when I came back to it, it started up normally with no issues and drove the 80 miles home fine.

When I dropped off my first passenger (requiring me to stop the engine) upon restarting the engine, the battery light stayed on.

It did it every time I have stopped the engine since too, and it's been left overnight with no difference.

On the diagnostic screen it shows 11.5v when running normally, which drops to 11.2v when the heated seats, radio, heated screens, blower and lights are all on.

I drove it for 25 miles with the light on, and stopped it around 5 times - engine started fine each time, and it drives fine too.

opinions?

I think I'd be putting a real volt meter/multimeter on the battery pretty soon.

If you've really only got 11.something volts, that would suggest the alternator had died but I can't see how it's still running after that time if that were the case. Confused

well the voltage dropped to 9.5 volts on Wednesday night while I was testing it, the alternator started to smoke so I sprayed it with a C02 extinguisher and can safely say, its shagged.

ordered a new one with belt from TLO (thanks!) but unfortunately after 5 hours spent trying to get the fan off with various tools (including one made from 3mm steel plate which just ripped under the force required to try to undo the fan) it is being recovered to my local independent (which my local dealership actually recommended!!) to be repaired!

alternator and fan

Hi
You do realise the fan is left hand thread and it should take around 2 to 3 hours to do the job quicker if you have done the job before
regards

fan

Hi James
If you soak it in releasing oil then take a large drift bar and put it on the edge of the big nut that holds it on and give it a large whak it will eventually release, mine was exactly the same and took ages to release
cheers

Hi Mike, tried penetrating oil, heat, 4ft scaffold bar on my spanner and a 3lb mallet - none of which worked, mainly because the tool I made was not strong enough to lock the waterpump pulley - despite being 3mm thick. Been quoted £70 for him to change it (he has the tool to lock the pulley properly) and considering I nearly lost all my knuckles and ripped my arm off trying to get it loose, I think I'll leave him to it - he's ex LR of 28 years recently opened his own LR business so I think it's also good for me to try him out - heard a good report about him already, and as said - my local LR dealer suggested him too!

Thanks for taking the time to reply, hopefully the info here may help others in the future too!

Thumbs Up
