Alternative to Yellow Top?

Hi - I've done lots of searching and it seems the advice spans such a large period of time that what was recommended is 2012 might not be the case in 2024!

I'm looking to add a simple VSR split charge system for a small fridge, lights and water pump for a camping setup.

I like the idea of a split charge system using the aux battery area as it means we can avoid having a big power station type thing taking up space and it can be used to jump the starter battery if needed too.

I know most people are probably using the power stations these days for this kind of thing but it seems a shame to waste the aux battery space.

Even the price of a yellow top seems way cheaper than equivalent power station if I've got my calculations correct.

Are there any other options other than the yellow top that are designed for deep cycle with engine start capability as well?

Avoid the optima's as they dont last like they used to since changing factories, in Australia most use an SSB dry cell battery as it fits the space nicely. I fitted a standard type 85ah AGM and cut a hole in the lid for it to fit, lasted 5 years so far but will switch to lithium once it dies.
Doing it now i would fit a lithium since the prices have come down and you get more capacity for a smaller size and weight.

Thanks will look into lithium - assume that means using a proper DC-DC charger only.

Lithium can be laid on their side.

That’s interesting, did that fit with the cover going back on? Also if you ever need to use it to start the car do you just use jumper cables? Or is there a split charge VSR that has an option to connect them when not charging?

No, but I've never refitted the cover. I've fitted the split charge in two D3 ad a D4. First I used Oddessy, second Yellow top, latest Numax. They all worked fine and were / are used to power a fridge and ancillaries whilst camping. Thumbs Up

Current set up has just a VSR and have just used jump leads when needed (its my daughters D3 so battery management was initially an issue with her!) Previous set ups were using a T-Max system that enabled you to link both batteries with the push of a button.

Cool thanks for info! Tempted by lithium but wondering about the location in engine bay being too hot. Apparently they don’t like charging over 50°C. Might have to get some kind of Bluetooth thermometer to see what it’s like in that battery compartment.

Will the Lithium battery also crank the engine?
