How many glass panels are on the Alpine Roof ?
Have an 07 demo on the drive, it has 3.
1 is electric at the front and the others are fixed for 2nd and 3rd row seats.
If you look at the USA spec it has only 2, although the one in the back is huge ie the complete roof space !
Was it intended that the back should be the same size as the glass panel on the exterior ? But perhaps LR change the roof liner to meet each countries safety reqs. Mrs Jones ? We've come for your Liver

Mine has 2 MY07 UK spec HSE. All of the raised roof between the rails is glass but from the interior there are only 2 panels. Not like the Merc 'alpine roof' all glass in & out.

It's 2 pieces of glass - one small tilt and slide opening panel at the front, and then a large piece of glass running roughly the length of the roofrails back.
However, as viewed from inside, it's 3 identical openings (with the exception of the front one which opens of course).
I suggest you look at your demo from above IE - 05 D3 TDV6 HSE - Zambezi Silver

I looked at the Alpine Roof video in the LR3 section on the LR USA site, and it's the same style as we've got here in that video - i.e. 3 openings as viewed from the inside. The camera angle makes them appear longer, and as it doesn't show the front one (only the rear two), it could be confusing - at first glances when I played it it gave the illusion of one long piece of glass, but it's not.
Unless you saw something different in another video? IE - 05 D3 TDV6 HSE - Zambezi Silver

Clever marketing I'd say.
Quite a few people who've seen my D3 (even someone from this site!) and didn't know any different thought that I hadn't got the full Alpine roof, and that it should have a full glass roof as viewed from the inside as well. The roof wouldn't be very strong at the back though if it was all glass which is probably why it isn't. The glass on the outside looks good when viewed from above which is probably why they didn't just put in smaller glass sections. IE - 05 D3 TDV6 HSE - Zambezi Silver

I seem to remember someone who should know these things, telling me that it was originally designed to be one piece of glass for the rear two rows, unfortunately there were found to be safety requirements for the third row passengers which changed the design, but the look was retained. I think there is an internal cross member in the roof between 2nd & 3rd rows to increase strength.
I may be wrong on this - or totally making it up - but I'm sure someone here will know more... 2005 D3 HSE

Full Length Rear Glass Sunroof - Confirmed |
|
Paul,
You are indeed correct. The original design did call for one large full length sun roof in the rear.
At the pre launch we attended back at Gaydon in 2004, prior ro buying my own car, we actually sat in one with the full roof in the rear.
For those non believers I have added a windows video into my gallery, which shows the designer talking about it, and the video pans to reveal the roof from the inside.
When I did collect mine in late 2004, I was surprised to see that it had two separate roofs in the back.
At the time my suppling dealer did not know why, but I subsequently found out that it was because the blind on the full length roof kept sagging all the time, tahat was the only reason for the design change.
Hope its helps put peoples minds at rest.

So does this mean that if you weren't bothered about the blinds you could cut that middle bit of trim out and go back to one big piece of glass? Now that would be an impressive mod... 8) 8) 8) 2005 D3 HSE

Guys,
There is now a section in my gallery - LR3 Interior.
Within it you will find a video and still of the interior full length alpine roof.
Sorry the video is so small, I had to compress it to upload, as the original wmv file was too big to upload here.
Enjoy,

Sorry nige,
The video and grab clearly show the rear two sun roofs.
The glass looks square but it's an optical illusion caused by the super wide film lens used to shoot the interiors. If you look carefully at the beginning of the shot you can see the overhead air-con controls for row two - you never actually see the front sun roof.
Still be interested to see if it's a do-able mod though ??? 2005 D3 HSE
