Winch Repair Challange - Help
Afternoon All
I’ve just bought a second hand Rhino winch which was reported to be slipping under load, and was for a good price to be honest.
Other than some wear and tear in the outside which I can buy replacement parts from Union Mart Ltd (uk seller for this brand), the reason for the slip is a broken plate on the 3rd planetary gear (see picture). This plate secures the smaller gear inside the 3rd planetary gear. Now the challenge.... Union Mart/Rhino want £121 for the entire gear assembly as they don’t sell individual parts or the specific securing plate. Alongside the other parts and replacement dyneema rope this makes it uneconomical to repair.
Any suggestions on how I could get made, find or any suggestions for replacing this plate? I’ve contacted a family member about having the part made, but nothing back yet.

Seems to be some pressed steel/alloy, not sure. Certainly looks like it’s been stamped out. Probably only 1mm thick, would need to check to be certain.
The ID the best I can measure (might be time for some digital Caliper) is 38mm. OD including where the screw holes should be I estimate at around 60mm, hard to tell as not there anymore.RLD CB Bracket

I guess one question , why did the fixings holes get sheared, and will it happen again ?

Yeah..... that’s THE question, can’t see any other damage/bad wear on gears but from looks of wear on supporting bars (from wire rope), it’s not had an easy life. Still got to take a detailed look at motor to check wear but is very smooth from initial checks, similar with drum brake.RLD CB Bracket

Still waiting on UnionMart/Rhino UK to get back to me. Has been very slow so far and keep getting the message they are checking with their parts team. I’m still pushing....
I’m still hopeful I can get the replacement part (without purchasing full gearbox) and repair the winch, as otherwise I think I’ll look at putting back on EBay for spares and look at alternative supplier, likely WinchMax. Mainly down to service responsiveness and availability of spares.RLD CB Bracket

Just heard back from Union Mart/Rhino and they don’t have any parts to assist in repair other than to buy a full planetary gear assembly. Very much a shame as the replacement parts are nearly ⅓ the cost of a new winch completely plus they would have received a lot more back in new rope and other bits I was going to purchase.
So.... before I put it back on EBay for spares, does anybody know of anywhere where I might be able to buy a 3rd stage planetary gear as a replacement instead of trying to find or make a new securing plate. I have all the dimensions and I would have hoped it was a generic size of gear based on a previous Warn model or something similar.RLD CB Bracket

To confirm ID of the securing plate is 38mm with a screw hole centre to centre of 53.5mm.RLD CB Bracket

Found a thrust bearing washer with right dimensions and one predrilled hole, drilled second and a few m4 washers later it’s rebuilt and ready for test 😃😃😃

So another quick update, the thrust washer seems to have worked well and after a Phonecall and a few emails to UnionMart they have been fantastic in sending me the replacement parts free of charge. Not sure why free as I was completely open about being second hand but shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
Hopefully should have the parts Tuesday or Wednesday thanks to Oliver at UnionMart.
Now the 2 downsides..... in the interim I’ve committed to buying another winch locally of same make/spec so I can build a fully working unit. I’m still going ahead with it as it sounds like a basic electrical issue. So if I can get it working and back to full health I’ll likely sell this on here/EBay...... don’t need two.
Posted on my want ad for a last bump on the discreet mount before I give into the massive pressure of Uncle Ray 😂🤣😂 and get a new one on order from him..... only RLD will do if new.RLD CB Bracket
