Alarm / Security System

Is there a way to test and confirm your alarm system really works, or is even there at all. It is mentioned throughout the manuals, however, I suspect there is not one at all. In particular, the motion sensors, etc. are mentioned. Perhaps it is not included on all vehicles like the LR3 SE. I'm not sure, so thought I would ask.

Simple way to check the motion sensors is to sit in the car and set the alarm. Wait about a minute and then try moving - the alarm should go off straight away.

I know mine works because I've locked the kids in when then they refused to get out of the car..... Rolling Eyes

You can see one of the motion sensors at the top of one of the 'B' pillars (between front and rear door) IIRC.

I also used the kids to test the alarm, trouble was, no one really noticed the alarm sounding - another subject that seems to have been debated on this site. So, whether it is there or not, really seems to make little difference. Given over 50% of cars in UK are stolen using the keys - alarm will not help. Thats the doom and gloom over for the day, must go and cheer myself up by going for a drive.

The alarm on my brand-new D3 tests itself automatically every couple of hours Crying or Very sad The neighbours are starting to like the car a little less now... It looks like a fault with either the tilt sensor or the interior alarm, when I set it on the 'double push' alarm it seems to be ok.
I will take it to the dealer on monday, so that they can read out what is causing the problem.

O well, some teething problems are to be expected, I guess... Rolling Eyes

If you double press the lock button the D3 only arms the perimeter alarm and disables the interior.

Other way round in the US I believe.

Also the D3 'wakes' every 2 hours or so to do its own Zen style self check so this may be related.

Surprised they can hear it though... unless your bleeper is set louder than in the UK.

Simon,

That is why I suspect the interior alarm or the tilt sensor, these are off when double pressing.

The 2-hourly wakeup could be the moment the alarm goes off, I will keep an eye (ear Smile ) on that. There is so much 'magic' going on with this car, I learn new things every day...

The bleeper is not extremely loud, but can be heard clearly even when the car is parked at the end of the driveway, some 30 meters from the house. But I don't think it will wake anybody up... Smile

What is that TSB about? Is there any way for us mere mortals to see those TSBs, or is it LR personnel only?

Thanks!

the Technical Service Bulletins all here...

http://www.landrovertechinfo.com/

You'll need to pay subscribe to access the docs. Can be done on a day by day basis if required.

If you quote the TSB number the dealer can access it of course.

PS It mentions that the battery backed up sounder may not be fitted or the wrong part number is fitted. Its a Volvo unit and includes the tilt sensor inside the little black box.

Just returned from a visit to the dealer. The read-out showed that the 'interior sensor' (well actually 'interieur alarm', in Dutch) caused the alarm to go off. They upgraded some software and said I had to remove the 2 pluche sheep from my rear window Embarassed They said that these may move if a large truck passes by, triggering the alarm. Shocked Sounds a bit far-fetched to me...
But I will give it a try anyway and see what happens.

Simon, the TSB you mentioned was already applied to my vehicle, they confirmed the proper part number on my request. I subscribed to that website, what a wealth of info! Thumbs Up

As I expected, the problem is still there: the alarm went off again last night. Has anyone here had similar problems with the interior alarm?
I guess I will be visiting the dealer again... Sad

Not with the Disco 3, but I came across a similar issue with a "quality" German make and the dealer and manufacturer poured resources on sorting it out, every item relating to it in their technical knowledgebase printed out & cross checked, and every part of the alarm replaced in sequence to see if it cured the fault (only when you compare the service standard of such manufacturers with what I have suffered with LR do you realise just how much Ford have to learn).
End result was almost laughable! - but despite having spent £thousands on replacement parts & labour I was just told they were delighted to have been able to resolve it..... the cause was 20p Wink ... there was a small inset tray in the centre console that I found very handy for keeping coins in, normally small change for parking meters, but those coins were vibrating together whenever a heavy vehicle moved nearby and causing a resonance that was setting off the alarm sensors (the sensors were a microwave type rather than basic ultrasonic).
This may not be the cause with the Disco3, but it might be worthwhile emptying the car of EVERYTHING so there is absolutely nothing that can move (& also sweeping it out completely, under seats etc + closing all the vents off in case a fly/spider etc is moving {yes I have had that with a household alarm!}) and then seeing whether it happens again!
Hope it helps!

Thanks Ecosse,

I did remove almost everything from the car, and the alarm still goes off.
But even if this would have worked, I would not be able to keep the car in such a clean state for any length of time, it is just not the type of person for that Embarassed

I just contacted the dealer, and they proposed to replace the (ultrasound?) detector unit in the interior, on the assumption that it may be too sensitive. Let's hope they are right. They seem to be willing to get this sorted out whatever it takes, so maybe Ford/LR service has improved. For now I am still very happy with my dealer...
