Found the remnants of the old pulley see pics. Compared to the new one I reckon the compressor must have seized and has ripped the thread from the cover.
Thoughts?

Well done. You got it off in the end.
What did you use to hold the center spindle?

Looks like the compressor has broken up and seized.

Yes it did. Cover and rubber dampers are separate and need to be installed. My compressor was seized so the kit is going back to AF.
Don't ask about fitting a replacement compressor yourself unless you are in to sado masochism. Spent most of the weekend and today pm installing and going for regass tomorrow. Please, no leaks,.......
I might do a write up just for entertainment value but seriously it was a bitch of a job and my body is a wreck😫

Disco regassed and freezing again😀
Two and a half days of hell fitting the compressor is now almost forgotten! I'm afraid I didn't take any photos during the process but happy to help anybody undertaking a compressor change with words of comfort and encouragement. I should add I replaced the condenser last year with the benefit of this amazing forum. That was considerably easier than the compressor in my view. I've just noticed the bruises on my torso from pushing up against the wheel hub in an attempt to put my hands in to spaces not meant for them and if you have shovels for hands you may struggle.😂.
One last thought and one that others have mentioned on difficult jobs, when you think you've reached an impasse, step away and come back to it after clearing your head, taking a break or seeking further information. It's amazing how the seemingly impossible can be achieved when you apply yourself.
Oh, and a good set of tools goes without saying.
Onwards and upwards!

Need some urgent advice on replacing the aircon compressor, is there a guide for it on here. Do you do it from underneath or through the wheel arch.

There are a couple of threads on the forum if you search but not a lot of people seem to have had to endure a change. What there is will give you a feeling for how big a job it is. You need to work through the wheel arch but the compressor only comes out through the engine bay. There is very little room and you will often be working by feel when trying to locate a nut, bolt or union.
I paid for access to Topix but that was no help particularly as my model (05) had a different design mounting for the pas pump which has to be removed to allow access to compressor mounting bolts, pipes and to remove via engine bay.
But, it can be done with the right tools (ratchet spanners are a must), patience and time.
