Air Suspension - when is it time to replace? |
|
Air struts are gas filled....at least the BWI originals say so.
Before air struts became popular I remember to have replaced gas filled struts - or oil filled as well - once reaching 80k miles or 7 - 8 years of age.
What about our D4 air struts? Is age and mileage defining the time of replacement? Can someone say how to test and define?
Regular gas / oil filled struts are bouncing back and forth when pushed into the spring. Air struts?
D4 ride is smooth but ....may be it can be better after 8 years and 110k miles. Achim

A gas strutt is still a gas strutt regardless of what the suspension is, ie coil or air spring.
I would say most car suspension components are pretty tired by 100k.

I share your opinion lynalldiscovery.
But how can I figure the struts are shoot? The car drives fine and compared to my wife's Mercedes GLE with Airmatic and less mileage I feel it drives much more comfortable than hers.
I guess I will spend time and money to replace the front struts first. Just to see how it feels when they are new.
But still I would like to know how to define they are on their way out. Achim

Well if it drives and handles fine I would say it is still okay.
Mine is on 140k, and the handling has gone off over the last 20k or so, new lower arms helped but once the newness had worn off (surprisingly quickly) the sloppy handling returned.
It most likley would benefit from new dampers all around, but the cost of parts alone does not justify it against the cars low value.
