Now I'm new to the whole disco thing, so don't know much about them - can you set up the air suspension to lower when you switch off the engine and then raise when you start up and move away - I only have little legs and in my advancing years etc - I'm not taken with the side steps.

If you could you'd need some way to override it: the car should be at off-road height before jacking it, and you might need to open the door over a low wall or landscaping.
I routinely lower the suspension when I park, and use off-road height when I drive down the dirt track, on the basis that it's more likely to stop working if it's not used regularly.  Went for a job as a human cannonball. Not the right calibre.

I also routinely drop the suspension when I park........if I know the area isn't likely to have hidden snags !!!
My worry if it lowered automatically is if you parked on a rough area somewhere, you could be lowering onto something very hard and very sharp Morris Dancers: Drinkers with A Dance Problem

The answer to the OP is basically no you can't do it automatically at stop/start. I don't recall anyone that has done it as a mod either. I'm sure you could do it as a mod if you really wanted to, depending on how brave you were with wiring and the like but I don't think anyone actually has.

Can't be set to lower but it will move from Access to Normal height once you go over 10 mph.

Thanks for the input, just a thought - we don't off-road, a field is about as rough as it gets for us.

Flick it into access when you stop.
When you drive off it will automatically lift above 10mph but can be a bit bouncy on the bump-stops untill it does 
And I'm sure it won't lower onto anything untoward as it would detect grounding and lift back up wouldnt it ?

When I need it I'll click access mode when slowing down so it's already set when you park and then will auto raise when you next drive off.
I haven't tried it yet but there was a thread about being able to lower the air suspension via the remote a little while ago too. Stolen - D4 Loire Blue

By the time it senses something holding it up, and stops lowering, it could be too late.  Only lower if you are sure the bumper's not over a high kerb, low wall or someone else's tow-bar  Went for a job as a human cannonball. Not the right calibre.
