Advice on towing electrics please?
Hi all, I have just bought a detachable tow bar for my D3 and am in the process of ordering the twin electrics kit for it, (Bearmach.)
My question is - is it necessary to hook the car up to diagnostics kit (Rovacom or whatever,) to alter the ECU settings for towing use. I've been told the engine management can go a little loopy if it sees a different engine speed/power output for a given demand/throttle input and end up in limp mode. Or is this just Chinese whispers?Clive

people talk about the effects on all sorts of components but I have seen no evidence of this and lots have fitted afterwards with no ill effects. it will turn off the rear pdc when a trailer is connected and it will not allow the suspension to automatically change height although can still be done manually. I believe but not fact that it does something more to maintain a level vehicle with the rear suspension. apart from all that the electrics will work fine.

Also stops the rear fogs on the car coming on, so they dont illuminate the caravan/trailer
Other than that though, they will plug in and work straight awayMy D3 Build Thread

Did mine, and prior to doing so I asked 10forcash the same question (he was servicing mine at the time), and said exactly the same as the answers above. Plugged mine all up, ran the cables, and so far ALL is well. Should be plug n play job.
