Advice pls. P0579 fault and +/- not working for IID tool

Hi all,
I've read the other threads about the P0579-00 fault. I'm located inner city and don't really have much opportunity to see if the speed control actually works or not.

However, the +/- buttons don't work for my IID tool.

Fortunately I also have an Autel diagnostic tool and it's reporting P0579-00 "Speed control multi-function input A - circuit range/performance". It's flagged as "intermittent"

For some time now, when driving at night I have also noticed the illumination of the speed control switch flickering.

EDIT: I am also getting "P0576-16 Speed control input - circuit low. Intermittent."

1. Is this likely to be a wiring loom issue?
2. And if so how do I get at it?
3. Is it feasible to repair the loom in situ?

likely to be the clock spring, flexi that goes between the steering wheel and car

Not necessarily the clock spring. Wink
My own steering wheel also had flashing lights on the buttons and this was entirely down to the little loom under the airbag. Make yourself an airbag removal tool and have a look. The cables tend to break at the crimped joints so have a good check to make sure the conductor isn't broken.

I cannot believe it's so busy where you are you cannot get up to 30mph to check the cruise buttons are working but if that really is true, try at weekend or look for an open stretch of road. Rolling Eyes

Looks like this when you have a broken wire. From memory, white was for lighting the buttons and brown ( extended with red in the pic ) was cruise function.

Aggh! Only just saw this post and I ordered a clock spring yesterday! Oh well, I guess I can flog it on ebay if I don't need it.

And yeah, you're right, I guess I can test the cruise control Smile - I just don't get to drive that car much nowadays because my wife and my son monopolise it!

Thanks for the advice - I will comandeer the car at the weekend and have a look! I'll need to make an airbag removal tool anyway.

Sorry about the late follow up.

It turned out one of the wires in the loom inside the steering wheel had broken off at the connector pin. I popped the connector pin out, soldered the wire back onto it and everything is working now.

See pic attached.

Thanklfully Clocksprings Australia accepted a return of the clock spring and gave me a full refund, less their original postage cost.
