Advice please -MY11 v MY12 and misinformation... |
|
Hello everyone,
I've just put down a deposit on a new D4 XS having been promised by the dealer that it was the current model. However, having done some more (belated) research it appears the MY12 would seem to be the current one, and more importantly have some significant benefits. I'm really frustrated because I asked the salesman 3 times exactly this point, I don't want to buy the 'old' model unwittingly, so I'd welcome thoughts on
1) what is the current waiting list for a basic(!) XS?
2) when was the MY 12 released / delivered?
3) is the 12 significantly better (I know it's 8 speed and there's some mention about improved steering)
I want to be prepared to challenge the dealer on Monday, Any help gratefully received, apologies for a rather grumpy first post!

1. Based on my own experience, 16 weeks plus.
2. From postings on here, the first of our members took delivery mid September.
3. Can't say as I haven't got mine yet.
Anecdotal evidence suggest that it is a better vehicle (but in the words of Mandy Rice-Davies " They would say that wouldn't they!").
If you're being offered a vehicle with no waiting time, it's either a cancelled order or MY11 IMHO. If it ain't got 8 speed, it's old stock.

See the Wiki for a list of most of the changes, but yes, there are also apparently steering / suspension improvements.
Also see my gallery for a copy of the official MY12 Product Brief:

I ordered mine mid September and have an early Dec handover date, but most other dealers were saying it could be nearer March for delivery. D4 XS MY12 Galway

Bill, Calcul@tor, thanks both - really helpful, and I've found the wiki and other theads really useful too - an impressive and informative site. Just makes me feel a bit stupid- Although I asked the difference - 6 old, and 8 new should have been easy enough even for me! Looks like I'm going to have to make a stroppy call on Monday,NAND be prepared for a wait.
While I'm on could anyone explain the position re privacy glass on an XS please - can't find it as an option but fear it's not standard - Alice please as I think it looks good!

Hi, I nearly fell into the trap of a cancelled order, definately old stock was offered. I can echo the above, 8 speed auto in the 2012 models, and as a quick forecourt glance in a window will show no transmission lever.
Luckily I backed out, and now waiting for my Build to start.

Hi Moxox,
We traded in our 2009 d4 with 6 speed box for a 2012 D4 with 8 speed box just over a week ago.
Thew difference was fairly noticeable at first and seems to be getting increasingly pronounced as we use the car more,. Quicker, quieter, better mid-range punch, better economy, generally smoother and more direct in it's handling/roadholding. If I were to take an MY11 I'd be wanting a significant discount as a result.
You don't have to answer but this sounds very much like Stratstone dealer tactics ?

Ordered my XS on 20th Sept, built on 11th Oct and picked it up a few days ago. It was at the dealers on 22nd Oct - I had a look at it to make sure it was the ordered spec as I've had mis builds before. The big delay in delivery was down to me being out the country on buisiness. Only thing they got wrong was a space saver instead of a full size spare, pretty minor and the right one is on order.
When I ordered it the LR system wouldn't let me have a glass roof unless I ordered a rear locking diff or rear seat entertainment! A quick phonecall from the dealer sorted that out and I got my roof.

MY12 has 255bhp 3.0l SDV6 engine, 8 speed gearbox with paddle shift, lower CO2 and better mpg.
1st MY12 were delivered to customers end Sep/early Oct.
MY11 has 244 bhp 3.ol SDV6 engine, 6 speed gearbox with command shift and Terrain Response knob.
Easiest way to tell is look inside the cabin if it has a traditional style gearlever it's a MY11 if it has a recessed silver knob then it's a MY12.

Really helpful comments, thanks all, I'm just hoping for a satisfactory response tomorrow, RSK21 are you able to say how similar cases have worked out please? I'm not naming names until I give the dealer a chance to correct their 'mistake'.
Thanks again

Hi Moxox,
Key thing I think is how the dealer describes the car on any order form he/she puts before you.
On all the paperwork I have the description is very clear and says the following:
Land Rover Discovery 4 HSE MY12 SDV6 255
I think you need to push your dealer to confirm or deny it's the 255 or not.
Hope this helps.

Current model IS the MY12 - has been since start of September - so there may be no conflict here. Try to keep the blood pressure under control till you know!

OK, so here goes -
I've been looking at a wide range of vehicles and settled on a Disco. I dedicated Saturday to viewing options and test drives. We liked the D3HSE, but thought the D4 superior for our purposes. We settled on a new D4GS in grey, and as the salesman had said there was a long waiting list we were very surprised when he said he'd found one for us! Naturally suspicious I asked 3 specific questions about whether it was the most current version etc and was assured it was. Anyhow, I left a deposit on a car I hadn't seen but was assured it was the latest model. However later on Saturday I did more (belatedly) research including this forum. Clearly there were inconsistencies, and (stupid me) I didn't spot the MY11 on the form. I posted the query above and received high quality, informative responses, which made it clear I'd been pretty naive.
I emailed and rang the dealer to register my horror at feeling I'd been palmed an old model at an(almost) new model price, but was greatly relieved they agreed to cancel the order and although reluctant, appear to be going to return my deposit on Wednesday, so it looks like it'll sort out.
It has been a close call (and obviously caused or at least facilitated by my over enthusiasm and trust) however, due, in no small part to the help I've received from this forum it seems to be working out a lot better than I feared!
Thanks everyone, now I need to see how to make a donation...
