Advice on living with a 2012 Disco 4

Hey guys,
I’m loving my disco 3 so much I’m going to sell my BMW 4 series convertible to pay for a Disco 4.... sadly that also means selling my Disco 3.

The only worry is I’m really lucky with the 3 as it has such a great past and with Disco having a reputation of Russian roulette what are the 4 like to live with?

I’m assuming most things were ironed out after the 3?

Thats what all the D4 owners used to say when they were quite new, but theres now an awful lot of threads on D4 issues, in all fairness probably not as many as the D3 had Mr. Green

I have thought about a D4 and the question I asked myself apart from the newer number plate is, what can it bring to the party that the D3 cannot?

Having had both the D3 driver’s seat is nicer in my opinion and it’s where I spend most of the time when I’m in the vehicle. D4 MY12 onwards (I think) has Bluetooth audio streaming but you can get that to D3 if you really want to.

The D4 steering wheel is perhaps a bit more comfortable but one can either have the D3 wheel remade or replaced with a D4 wheel although that required some magical module to translate commands. I’m not sure when the 8 speed transmission came along, my MY10 had 6 speed.

Center console controls (orange lights) and IPC a graphical display is a bit nicer.

I think they’re both excellent vehicles but if I upgraded today back to a D4 HSE I’m not sure what I would get compared to the D3 HSE I have now.

edit: perhaps a 0.6 L more engine Whistle

I think a D4 V8 does roughly equivalent to the D3 V8 so ~15 L/100 km or 15.6 mpg. The D4 TDV6 did around 11.6 L/100 km or ~20.2 mpg mixed city/highway. No idea what a D3 diesel consumes. Thumbs Up

That’s odd, that’s a lot worse than the D3..... I thought they were better

I had from new a D3 S manual - Jan 05 - and now a 2012 D4.

The 3 was the best all round car I have ever owned - I used it off and on road and for towing my 25' yacht trailer. It was practical and looked it. It was almost faultless for 6 years and then cost me (or rather my firm) almost £3K in servicing ( the dreaded belts) and suspension and other issues in year 7.

I only sold it as I was going to retire and I knew I'd get a good deal buying it off my firm.

Advantages over the 3 - quieter, quicker, sharper to drive, better mpg. Better motorway cruiser.

Disadvantages - blingy looks ( imv ) , no 'box choice, even more electronics, bigger wider wheels.

The same; peerless off road with the right tyres and pretty near unstoppable as I'm sure you know without. Lofty views and driving position.

Hopefully not the same; the massive year 7 bills.

Good luck and enjoy.

Strangely I didn't find any difference in mpg between my D3 and the current D4. For like for like trips they are virtually the same. Real mpg, not lie-o-meter. Thumbs Up
