Adding a second battery
Anyone have any suggestions for adding a second battery? I have a US spec 06 HSE... Most interested in the wiring and circuits needed for effective charging... and also where the battery is located under the hood and also how you got it mounted....
Some of us just put a Optima Yellow Top in the second battery compartment and wire it to the main battery in parallel with a solenoid to disconnect it when the ignition's off, there are other options with split charge systems, a search of the site should reveal more set-upsThe End
I have a 2 year old installation of Optima yellow top and Piranha electronic controller with no funtional issues to report. There was an installation issue when the installer connecter the power sense lead to the electronic fan clutch controller, the one that runs the fan for a minute each time you start the vehicle. I did not find the issue for 6 months as the one minute of charging each time the engine started was enough to keep the battery topped off until I did some long driving stints with the fridge and radio going and noticed the battery appearing to not hold charge well.TDV6
I'm running an Exide Orbital (http://www.exide.com.au/products/orbital.php)
I've hooked this up with the Land Rover Australia approved system for managing/charging an auxiliary battery in the Disco 3/LR3 - from www. traxide.com.au (mind you - site apperas to be down at the moment).
Worth doing!
cheers,

Suplementary Question
How do you route a "nice heavy" feed to the back from the second battery box?
I know there's a feed for caravan hook up going back there, rated for a bout 30A, but that is a) off the main battery and b) not big enough for the inverter I want to put into the "unused" voids behind the l/h rear wheelarch.Rob Smith

Two ticks and I'll edit this post with a picture of the cable route
Here you go:

Perhaps a stupid question:Is it a time delayed solenoid, i.e. kick in a couple of seconds after the vehicle is started, or kicks in straight away when the ignition is turned?

Shouldn't really matter with a yellow top - it can handle the starting discharge - not so sure tho with another type of battery
TFC did the installation for me and I can't remember whether there is a delay on the solenoid or not - if you want technical specifics TFC's your man.LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Thanks Disconutter, that's very helpful.
Heine, I take it that it's not a deep cylce then. ? Why is the fear of long words called hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia?

Actually it is - but the Optimas are a much more robust battery

FWIW,
I use a bluetop Optima (for higher CCAs) and its ability to sit between red and yellow perfomance (it will do heavy discharge and deep cycle).
TFC did my dual battery install and from what I gather (Ten to confirm) it is kinda load sensing so, should you heavily discharge the aux. battery the main starter won't be flattened off at ingition on as the batteries try and level out (between themselves as they become in-parallel) due to the way that the current flows via the soleniod.
So, the main battery should be able to start the car/ECUs and handle the high charge from the altenator and still cope with the demand from the Aux battery as it needs to be charged as well.
The Altenator and and charge rates on D3 are high and the Optima and Odyssey are able to cope with this very well. The M-Power Express

Agree that the optima blue is a better option - but for some reason in SA we only get the yellow and the red and to import a blue direct was too expensive
