Adding an Amplifier

Hi there,

Has anyone added an amplifier? I want to add a 12" or 15" subwoofer (something that can be removed quickly when space is needed) but I need to install an amp first.

Does anyone know where the existing amp is installed? Behind the dash?

Cheers,
Stuart

Thanks Wiggs! Well, that's interesting...I could just swap it out then for an upgraded version...indeed, this makes upgrading all speakers a little easier...I just didn't want to take the dash apart but if I only have to change the amp under the seat it would be relatively easy methinks.

Depending on what spec car you have ... You may not be able to just remove the amp as there is fibre optic cables that need to kept in a loop

Just got the basic XS spec for hifi and satnav - no upgrade in this respect.

I'm thinking of a small JL Audio amp; very compact that will simply use the same connections ideally but allowing me to add a sub.

Why not use an active sub that can take the hi-level (amplified) feed from the passive sub that you already have in the tailgate?

It's an idea although I'm looking at getting a 15" sub; ideally JL Audio and I've not seen an active version.

amp

Hi
I dont think you can take the original amp out as wiggs said it needs the OE amp for the MOST fibre optics to loop the signal round you simply cant just take it out, However there is a solution but its not cheap a company called MoBrigde do the very thing you are after but as far as I know this is the only correct way
cheers

Thanks Mike - I've got some homework to do then to work out how to get this idea to work.

I have a fair amount of good quality car audio equipment sitting in my garage from previous cars so thought I might see what I can use to upgrade the stock system - but bass being my main focus. I'd need to buy the sub although I have a 12" Cerwin Vega unused lying around somewhere that I probably should try first. I have all the cabling I'd need and a variety of DLS separates that may fit too.

Right then, looks like an AudioControl LC6i or JL Audio Cleansweep is the solution to adding to the existing Logic 7 system without disrupting it. Very Happy

ive used the cleansweep many times - can be a total pain in the Censored ! and only really desirable if you are adding front speakers etc, id build an enclosure to sit in the nsr (if u dont have rear air con) with jl10w3v3
and maybe a 250/1 to power it....disconnect the sub in tailgate and route those cables into the amp (u can put hi level signals straight into the slash series amps)

In the end I went for a CACHE COE6 ( http://www.cacheaudio.com/coe6.html ) which allows you to add an aftermarket system without replacing the existing controls or amplifier. Cheaper than AudioControl and JL's Cleansweep too and does exactly what is needed to add amps and speakers.

I've added an MTX T815 15" subwoofer in a box that is easily unhooked and removed - powered by a JL Audio sub amp.

Next is to change the component speakers to DLS and add another JL Audio amp to run those. The amps and Cache line output converter are hidden so only the sub box stands out but removable so achieves what I'm looking for.
