Yep okay my bad phrasing but I do that. Ensure the hitch is settled on the gauge and remains at towing height.

Seeing as I started this thread - I get the idea of making sure the hitch is at the same height as it would be when attached to the car (so I will go an re-measure this, but last time I know my towball sits at 18" to the center of the ball, and given the D4 self levels it ought to be the same with the 'van on, but I will check next time its hitched).

As the melenco is a long bit of kit I will need to see what height its commpressed down to, to see if that matches the "hitched" height. As my drive slopes slightly at the point where the hitch head is (the rest where the 'van wheels are is level) I guess I might be playing round with bits of wood to find the "level"

Ahh well - 1st world issues, where would we be?

Al, re first para the car will stay at the same height regardless of what's on the hitch so all good there.

For measuring, bits of wood are the only way. It's a pita but if the hitch is at 18" (in your case) to its centre point when the gauge which is compressed by the nose, you will have an accurate 'in tow' nose weight. I bet it's different to what you were expecting.
