Before I had mine replaced I was running with 4 working and despite a cold winter, it started fine. Made me wonder if replacing the front four which seem more accessible is sufficient.2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Always remove the glow plugs with a warm/hot engine and you'll never have any problems with them.
Meaning they will come out very easy and will not break.

I have to disagree Alex. Tried this method with 2 TDV6s and didn't work on either
Even tried have it running with the bare minimum of in the way, to ensure everything was hot. Made no difference with either.
With the 2nd, I even tried driving it hard, tried when everything Was cooking hot, when it was cooling, tried freeze spray, vibrating impact gun. Still would have snapped. My D3 Build Thread

Rather than threads or dissimilar metals being the issue it appears to be a build-up of carbon that enlarges the tip which prevents removal. The weak construction does the rest.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Is there not a treatment for de-carbonizing(or what ever the big word is) beforehand then trying to remove?
I only ask as I think mine are on there way out(forgot to mention it the other day Mikey )

Alan was going to let me try them on his. Not going ahead with it now.
I know when my engine arrived, all 6 plugs were working, but only 3 could be removed.
Very tempted to have my own Terraclean done, and try it on my own engine. Would have to be done fairly soon after having the clean done...My D3 Build Thread

Only about £80ish for a terraclean, so well worth giving it a go and see if it helpsIggy/Ieuan

From a world that was forced to solve things without much help...
I've seen during time, on one of my friend's garage, that the chance of removing successfully the glow plugs "on hot" is much greater than "on cold".
There are many things that the books and experience said that must be removed "on hot".
It's clear from the words of Mikey that he also thought of this and he had a correct judgment.

Alex,
I don't doubt that doing it hot is the correct way and most service manuals state this as a requirement. For larger gauge glow plugs this does work and whilst I am sure it can only help with the fine plugs fitted to this engine they are just not strong enough to be reliably removed.
So far the best way appears to be the low power vibrating tools, time and patience. DIY can prove to be better as we tend to have the patience and mortal fear of breaking them so spend hours easing them out. Terraclean sounds interesting and anecdotally those running on 2sO have better luck, presumably for the same reason.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
