-6° and missfire on startup
Found out this morning that after waiting for the glow plug light to go out, on starting there seemed to be a misfire on one or two pots.
I let it run at idle for 5 mins and the misfire wasn't so apparent but still there so started my journey in the snow.
Once it had reached normal operating temp, there seemed to be no sign of the misfire.
Could this be a glow plug or the dreaded injector problem rearing its ugly head?

I was really chuffed when i started the D3 at -6, and it started instantly and ran smoothly.
Gave the glowplugs 3 to 4 seconds before attempting to start.
My V70 on the other hand, which i have never checked the glowplugs ever and i assume none work, took about 2 attempts at 10 seconds each but once fired up ran smoothly

If you are using supermarket diesel try using high quality diesel re Shell/Esso it does make a difference.Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.

I've used Tesco fuel in conditions down to -20c, never had a problem. My D4 is currently full or Tesco diesel and she started normally at -6c today. It's easy to blame the fuel when the real problems is the glowplugs or injectors.

Well you can only tell it as you see it. I have certainly see a difference in starting using non Tesco fuel. Maybe a D4 has a different set up re glow plugs to a 11 year old D3!Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.

Same age as my D3 before the engine failed. She lived on a diet of Tesco fuel when in the UK. Yes it had starting issues, difficult to start and lump running for a while but that disappeared immediately on changing the injectors. As I said, easy to blame the fuel, as peeps do when they break down in the Alps in winter, when the real reason is the intercooler(s) have frozen solid in low temp/high humidity conditions.

From the stuff I was planning on doing but never did for my sad D4, there was an interesting TSB regarding TDV6, the intercooler and cold - LTB00364.

Is this stutter a normal characteristic for glow plugs in these low temps?
(I’ve not owned a diesel before the D3)
Or if it’s not do I need to swap in news ones?
Is that a straightforward thing to do on a D3?

Could be glow plugs, could be injectors. The symptoms are very similar. Injector balance figures would rule them in/out, or test the glow plugs.

As DSL says test glowplugs, if ok use iid tool to look at injector reading imbalance.
Try 400ml of two stroke jaso fc spec through a full tank also, it will help lubrication and cleaning of injectors
I had the same symptoms, changed everything but in my case it never got well again, now sold!
Hoping its something simple and cheap for you👍....................................................................................................
