4WheelFun compares D3, ML280 and XC90

The current (April 2006) issue of the German car magazine 4WheelFun compares the Discovery 3 with the Mercedes ML 280 CDI and the Volvo XC90 D5. They found the D3 ahead of the Mercedes by a short head, with the Volvo rather an also ran, especially off-road. The summary of the result says:
“If only on-road properties are considered, then the Mercedes is the clear winner. It is ahead of the Volvo too in comfort and performance. The Discovery is completely different: it is slower and not so agile but it has a more authentic feel than the other two. Off-road the Land Rover wins just as clearly as the Mercedes on the road. A surprise: the first class Landy brakes.”

One point mentioned which I hadn’t known was that the ML 280 (with off-road package) and the Disco3 have the same 4x4 transmission, from Magna-Steyr in Austria.

The magazine has also two other articles of specific LR interest, an interview with Paul Newsome, leader of the Advanced Concepts section at Land Rover (mostly about hybrid models – timescale about ten years), and the first part of a report on a journey from Ethiopia to Namibia and back to Kenya in an almost 30 year old Land Rover Series III

Eric.
